Claude Boudreau, 59, of Laval, Québec, was identified as the victim. His tractor trailer, for reasons still unknown, crashed into another truck stopped in a construction zone. &/#3&'r#3*&'4 ASSAULT ARREST Brian St Denis, 47, from Hawkes- bury, was arrested and charged with assault after a disturbance on May 29 in North Glengarry. Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry OPP officers were called to a residence on Kincardine Street West in North Glengarry at approximately 5:21 p.m. The investigation indicated that an altercation resulted in a man striking another man. St Denis was released and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Alexandria on July 10. SANDBAGS CLEAN-UP The Township of Champlain will be organizing a team of volunteers to assist homeowners with the removal of their sandbag walls, on Saturday June 8. Starting at 9 a.m., firefighters will go door to door to the affected residences, in order to have the property owners sign a liability waiver that allows the volunteers to enter onto private property. Volunteers will be assisting only in the removal of sandbags. They are not authorized to assist with any other clean-up requests.

Une trentaine d’employés municipaux syndiqués de la Ville de Hawkesbury ont manifesté leur colère la semaine dernière. « On demande une augmentation de salaire de 1.5 % et ils ne veulent rien savoir. Mais la mairesse, elle, vient de se donner une augmentation de 25 %, a lancé Alain Larocque, président du Syndicat canadien de la fonction publique (SCFP) #1026, lors d’une manifestation devant l’hôtel de ville de Hawkesbury, le vendredi 31 mai dernier. Les membres sont fâchés, ils sont tannés et ils veulent juste être respectés. » Cette manifestation survient plus d’un an après l’échéance de la dernière convention collective des 62 membres syndiqués. Ce groupe d’une soixantaine d’employés com- prend des employés des travaux publics, du complexe sportif, de la bibliothèque, qui n’a pas été renouvelée depuis avril 2018. inspection of the facility is done. The federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) owns the causeway access to the marina site and co-maintains it with the township. DFO will first have to inspect the causeway for any flood damage and certify if it is safe to use. If the causeway is certified safe, then Stinson Fuel has to inspect the marina fuel tanks it rents to the township. The tanks, which have a total capacity of 13,500 litres, were emptied of all boating fuel before the marina closed last year for the winter. But an inspection is still necessary to make sure the tanks escaped damage from the flooding. Parks and recreation staff will do their own inspections of the marina office and floating docks and other parts of the facility, as part of an overall report to township council. The department had planned to have the floating docks modified with a new underwater anchoring system during the spring, before the start of boating season. That modification is now delayed until after the flooding subsides and the site inspections are done.
The L’Orignal Marina is flooded and that means a delay to the start of the boating season in Champlain Township. “Right now we can’t access the buildings, so we can’t see anything,” said Lisa Burroughs, parks and recreation director. She further explained that the floodwaters of the Ottawa River still cover the causeway access to the marina office, fuel tanks, and all of the floating docks BUUIFGBDJMJUZ5IF8IBSG4USFFUFOUSZUP the causeway is barricaded and those barricades will remain in place while Champlain Township parks and recreation staff waits for the floodwaters to recede and inspection of the facility is possible. The May long weekend is the traditional start of boating season for the township, and for 49 seasonal boat owners who lease docking space at the marina. This year’s spring flooding of the Ottawa River delayed opening of the marina and has pushed the official start of boating season into June or July, depending on how soon

The Vankleek Hill Cougars junior hockey team has a proud trio of new owners. “We love the game,” said Greg McEachern, Cougars assistant coach and now one-third of new ownership team. McEachern, along with head coach Franky Dopelhamer and general manager Marc Berniqué, took over June 1 as the official owners of the Vankleek Hill Cougars. The three began negotiations with the club executive for purchase of the team several weeks ago after the end of the 2018-2019 NCJHL season. «We got together and started talking,» said Berniqué. What prompted them was mutual concern about the struggle the club went through each season to find new volunteers to sit on the board and occupy team management posts. VKH Cougars President Mario Mes- sier expressed satisfaction with the new ownership deal. He noted that one of the conditions in the agreement was a guarantee that the Cougars would continue as part of the Vankleek Hill hockey scene for at least a five-year period. «That was part of the deal,» Messier said. «One of the conditions our executive was not going to let go on.» There was no hesitation from the trio about that condition. «We wanted to make sure to keep the team in Vankleek Hill,» added Berniqué said. «And we also had a good experience last year with the team,» stated Dopelhamer. One other condition is that proceeds from sale of the team go into a special trust fund. What money remains in the club treasury also go in the fund. The trust fund will sup- port an annual scholarship program for three area high schools: Vankleek Hill Collegiate Institute, Le Sommet, and Ecole secondaire catholique régionale de Hawkesbury. Berniqué, Dopelhamer, and McEachern will also continue in the team management positions they held. «The club will now have continuity,» Mes- sier said. «You can be sure there will always be someone managing the team year in and year out.»
