inspection of the facility is done. The federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) owns the causeway access to the marina site and co-maintains it with the township. DFO will first have to inspect the causeway for any flood damage and certify if it is safe to use. If the causeway is certified safe, then Stinson Fuel has to inspect the marina fuel tanks it rents to the township. The tanks, which have a total capacity of 13,500 litres, were emptied of all boating fuel before the marina closed last year for the winter. But an inspection is still necessary to make sure the tanks escaped damage from the flooding. Parks and recreation staff will do their own inspections of the marina office and floating docks and other parts of the facility, as part of an overall report to township council. The department had planned to have the floating docks modified with a new underwater anchoring system during the spring, before the start of boating season. That modification is now delayed until after the flooding subsides and the site inspections are done.
The L’Orignal Marina is flooded and that means a delay to the start of the boating season in Champlain Township. “Right now we can’t access the buildings, so we can’t see anything,” said Lisa Burroughs, parks and recreation director. She further explained that the floodwaters of the Ottawa River still cover the causeway access to the marina office, fuel tanks, and all of the floating docks BUUIFGBDJMJUZ5IF8IBSG4USFFUFOUSZUP the causeway is barricaded and those barricades will remain in place while Champlain Township parks and recreation staff waits for the floodwaters to recede and inspection of the facility is possible. The May long weekend is the traditional start of boating season for the township, and for 49 seasonal boat owners who lease docking space at the marina.
