Homme accusé de conduite avec facultés affaiblies
Un homme de Rockland a été arrêté la semaine dernière et accusé de conduite avec facultés affaiblies. Shawn Brennan, 45 ans, doit paraître en cour à L’Orignal le 31 janvier 2018. Il a été arrêté dans le cadre d’une de six opérations RIDEmenées dans la région par le détache- ment de Russell de la Police provinciale de l’Ontario (PPO). En plus de ces vérifications RIDE, la PPO a également répondu à 35 collisions de véhi- cules, cinq vols, quatre conflits familiaux, trois cas de méfait et trois agressions. Six hommes et deux femmes ont été accusés de 14 infractions diverses. Parmi les conflits familiaux, un homme de 25 ans de la municipalité de la Nation a été accusé de violence conjugale et d’agres-
sion contre son jeune enfant. Fraudes sur Kijiji
La PPO de Russell étudie actuellement une série de fraudes sur le site Web Kijiji. Le suspect en question offre de vendre des articles comme des camionnettes et des pneus d’hiver, mais il ne les fait jamais suivre. Le suspect communique unique- ment par texto et convainc les gens de payer par virement Interac. Il propose ensuite de livrer les articles à une adresse à Casselman, mais il n’a jamais livré d’articles. Le suspect n’a également aucun lien avec l’adresse de Casselman. Toute personne qui a été victime de cette fraude ou qui a des renseignements à ce sujet peut communiquer avec le détective Oickle à vincent.oickle@opp.ca ou au 613-443-4499.
Community grants available The South Nation Conservation Authority (SNC) is accepting applications for its 2018 Communi- ty Environmental Grants Program.Any community non-profit community group with an environmen- tal or recreational project planned in the South Nation River watershed region is eligible to apply for a grant of up to $300 to assist with their project. Grants categories include: river, heritage, agri-environmental, and community outreach. So far the SNC has approved 20 grants, totaling $6000 for such projects as the Boisés Est Wood Fair, the Russell Historical Society’s Heritage Festival, the Crysler Citizens Committee Fun Run, and the Russell KinClub’s annual Poutmaster Fishing Derby. The SNC also has environmental aid grants available for landowners under its Clean Water Program. Champlain Township council thinks that if the province is going to make money from a new “sin tax” then municipal governments should be entitled to a share. Township council directed administra- tion, during its Jan. 9 session, to draft a resolution for review and approval at a future meeting. The resolution will propose that the provincial govern- ment, and the federal government if necessary, set up a marijuana tax rebate program similar to the gasoline tax rebate program, which benefits municipal infrastructure programs. Mayor Gary Barton said it was a good idea though he doubted that Champlain Township itself would ever have an Ontario marijuana dispensary similar to the LCBO. – Gregg Chamberlain Within the last week, from January 7 to January 14, the Russell detachment of the OPP conducted six RIDE checks and arrested and charged oneman in Rockland for impaired driving. Shawn Brennan, 45, is scheduled to appear for his first court appearance in L’Orignal on January 31, 2018. A 25-year-old man from the Nation municipality was charged with spousal assault andwith assaulting his young child.
