Helping Those in Need in Puerto Rico In the Aftermathof Disaster
This past September, two massive hurricanes swept through the Caribbean. Hurricanes Irma and Maria left extreme damage in their wake and displaced thousands of people. Even today, many people in Puerto Rico are still without power.
themmost. While this is just a small gesture, we hope these generators, along with the food, clothing, and other supplies, will make a difference and help to bring these families one step closer to normalcy.
Through the rest of the year and into 2018, we will continue to do what we can to help
Following the hurricanes, we went to work opening up Your Oviedo Dentist as a drop-off location for donations. We took in food, clothing, and many basic necessities. At the end of our drive, we collected a truck’s worth of items to send to Puerto Rico. For us at Your Oviedo Dentist, the destruction in Puerto Rico hits close to home. Many of us have family on the island. I was born there, as was Dr. Colon. We grew up there and received educations there. We know the island and its people. It broke our hearts to see it in such ruin. We wanted to make a difference and help as many people as possible get on their feet and back to normal. In addition to collecting everyday goods, we also set up a crowdfunding web page through YouCaring.com. There, we were able to collect about $1,000 in donations. Your Oviedo Dentist matched those and added another $4,000, bringing the grand total to $6,000. With this money, we were able to purchase several generators to give to families in need. As of this writing, about 60 percent of Puerto Rico is without stable power, and it’s expected that much of the island will be without power for months to come.
those in need in Puerto Rico. Recovery is going to take a long time and there is still so much left to do. In Florida, we were fortunate to only suffer minor damage and a few days without power. It’s hard to imagine being without power for months. As we put together more ways to help Puerto Rico, we have other initiatives in the works, as well. One of those initiatives is Dentistry FromThe Heart. On Dec. 2, we will be hosting a Dentistry FromThe Heart event. The event is open to the community, and we will be providing free dental work throughout the day. This is our seventh year participating in Dentistry FromThe Heart, and over the years, we have come to serve up to 130 people during the event. This is all possible thanks to the collaborative efforts of other dentists in the area. Together, we join forces to improve our community’s dental health. Thank you again to everyone who has helped with our Puerto Rico relief efforts. We could not have done it without you. We are thankful to everyone in the communitywho has given back to help those in their time of need. We are fortunate to live in such a community. If anyone wishes to contribute to further relief efforts, let us know. Thank you, and we hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving! –Dr. Lopez

Most people like to be helpful. If someone is having a hard time, we’ll happily offer some advice. However, even the most well- intended advice can have damaging consequences. When it comes to our teeth, there is a lot of misinformation going around. Here are some common bits of “wisdom” you can ignore. Bad Advice: Use activated charcoal towhiten your teeth. Activated charcoal, which is not the same as the bricks in your barbecue, is the latest beauty craze, thanks to its ability to absorb chemicals and toxins. Walk down the health and beauty aisle, and you’ll find charcoal in soap, face masks, shampoo, moisturizer, and deodorant. However, before you use charcoal to whiten your teeth, remember most stains are beneath the surface, where the charcoal can’t reach. Ruin Your Teeth THIS BAD ADVICE WILL
what kills germs or freshens breath. In fact, alcohol in mouthwash has been known to cause dry mouth, which can make your breath smell worse and lead to more germs. Studies from BioMed Research International found alcohol-free mouthwash may have a better effect on the gloss, color, and hardness of your teeth. Bad Advice: Don’t brush bleeding gums; give them time to heal. Bleeding gums are often a symptom of gum disease or a warning that gum disease is on the horizon. When plaque is allowed
to build, it hardens into tartar. This calcified material irritates your gums and can potentiallywear them down. The onlyway to remove the damaging plaque buildup is to brush your gums regularly. Not brushing due to bleeding will only lead to further problems. However, it’s important to determine the cause of bleeding, as it may also have something to do with your toothbrush or diet. If your gums are bleeding regularly, let your dentist know. When we give advice, we certainly mean well, but the best of intentions don’t make up for bad results. Let’s stick to what we know and leave the dental advice to the experts.
Furthermore, scrubbing the gritty, abrasive substance across your teeth is likely to erode your enamel and damage your gums, leading to more dental problems. Bad Advice: The best kind of mouthwash has alcohol. If your mouthwash burns, it likely contains alcohol. Some insist the burning means the
mouthwash is working, but alcohol isn’t necessary for mouthwash to be effective. Alcohol just stabilizes the formula. It isn’t
