Percussion testing and cold sprays are fast, effective ways to assess the health of the pulp and surrounding tissues. In some cases, it’s beneficial to confirm an initial diagnosis with radiographs or a cone beam. Above all, listen closely to the patient. They will often tell you exactly where the problem is. Myth #3: Speed is paramount. Reality: Focus on organization and efficiency, and faster procedure times will come. For GPs, one of the biggest barriers to doing more endo isn’t skill but rather a lack of systemization. To remove unnecessary friction, develop a consistent roadmap from access to obturation to restoration. And forget shortcuts. Successful outcomes depend on careful location of canals and thorough shaping and irrigation. Having a dedicated “endo bin” you can easily transfer between operatories is a great way to keep your consumables organized and cut down on delays. Myth #4: Patients prefer specialists. Reality: While some cases are best handled by an endodontist, patients typically prefer convenience and continuity of care.

Myth #1: Root canal therapy is too complex and unpredictable for everyday dentistry. Reality: With a clear workflow and the right tools, endo becomes highly repeatable. It’s understandable why many GPs are quick to refer out their endo cases. But a root canal doesn’t have to break the schedule. Most of the perceived hurdles fade away when you divide treatment into manageable steps, implement best practices, and use reliable equipment. Remember: The goal isn’t perfection — it’s predictability.
