THE EVOLUTION OF THE DREAM TEAM: A 25-YEAR JOURNEY

It’s safe to say that I wouldn’t have made it the past 25 years that North County Water & Sports Therapy Center has been in business without the amazing staff I have today — and I wholeheartedly mean that! Twenty-five years ago, when I first went out on my own, it was a staff of three: me, myself, and I. For 1–2 years, I ran a one-man team, and the daily grind became a challenge while trying to best serve my clients and balance all of the administrative, clinical, and business obligations. I very quickly learned just how important a team is and the value of each position. That time period really led me to appreciate the amazing team we have in place even more than I might have already. In the early years, growth seemed gradual yet steady. Fast forward to 2020 when COVID-19 struck, and everything became a standstill for us for some time. But then (post-COVID), the

physical therapy industry shot up for us, and we suddenly got very busy and even expanded. Unfortunately, hiring became difficult, and I found it counterproductive to hire just anyone to fill a spot. So, we hung on for dear life, rode it out, and waited. Eventually, we formed a team of people who share the same values as our veteran team and me — we really care about the well-being of our clients. So, now we have nine therapists, including myself, and three front desk team members. Waiting for the right people to help us grow was well worth it because our team is exceptional, and I’m so grateful to be surrounded by such talented, selfless, caring, and amazing individuals every day. Our team is relatively new, but the flow in the office is seamless and professional. Everyone works extremely well together, and I couldn’t ask for anything more. Other members of our North County Water & Sports Therapy Center family have been with me for many, many years; Jan, for example, has been here 20 years. So, it’s safe to say we have a great mixture of individuals who all work together to deliver the magic to our clients. I even have an office manager I can trust when I’m out of the office to handle everything that comes down the pipeline — it’s such a relief. From the moment clients enter the office to receive treatment, fill out necessary paperwork, and finally check out, our team is thorough and completely invested in ensuring our clients receive the very best care. At the end of the

day, our therapists work after-hours to conduct research and sit in on case conferences to develop plans for our complex cases. One of my favorite things to hear from patients is praise for our staff because I know just how special they are, and it’s rewarding to see that reflected in the opinions of our patients. For anyone reading this, I ask you to thank the person you are working with, because that little recognition around Labor Day — and any time of the year — goes a long way. And it means a lot to me for my team to feel that appreciation. I want to wish everyone a happy and safe Labor Day! And now, let’s welcome fall and the holiday season!

I’M SO GRATEFUL TO BE SURROUNDED BY SUCH TALENTED, SELFLESS, CARING, AND AMAZING INDIVIDUALS EVERY DAY.

WANT TO PAINT YOUR KITCHEN CABINETS? READ THIS CRASH COURSE FIRST

Have you stepped into your kitchen in the last few weeks and thought it could use more color? If so, you’re not alone. Colorfully painted kitchen cabinets are a hot trend right now in home decor, to the point that HGTV released a step-by-step guide to the painting process this winter! However, just because you want to paint your kitchen cabinets doesn’t mean you should — at least not before reading the argument for each side and getting painting tips from the pros.

consuming, but it’s much cheaper than springing for brand-new wood.

The Cons: •

It’s a pain in the butt. Painting your cabinets yourself means disassembling them, making your kitchen unusable for days, and doing hours of manual labor. You can avoid some of this hassle by hiring a professional, but the price of the job will increase. Your mistakes might haunt you. Maybe you’ll regret your color choice, maybe your paint job will be uneven, or maybe that primer spill just won’t come out of your grout. These are risks you’ll need to take if you choose to paint.

2 Reasons to Paint Your Cabinets — And 2 Reasons Not To

2. Label every panel and draw a cabinet map. Trust us — numbering all of your drawers and doors makes reassembly easy. If you don’t do this, you’ll end up crying on the kitchen floor in the middle of a cabinet puzzle. 3. Get scientific about your finishes. According to Remodelista, you should “forget matte and eggshell finishes and opt for semi-gloss, gloss, or satin instead — hardy finishes that are easy to clean.”

The Pros: •

You could increase your home’s value. Painted cabinets are hot, so buyers may be willing to pay a premium for them (unless they hate your color choice). Plus, light- colored cabinets may make your kitchen seem bigger. If you hate your cabinets, you’ll save money. Painting cabinets yourself is time-

Painting Tips and Tricks 1. Deep-clean before you paint. According to HGTV, it’s NOT a waste of effort to clean your cabinets before you sand them. In fact, it’s a vital step to remove grease that could ruin your paint job.

FIND YOUR BALANCE 5 EXERCISES TO IMPROVE BALANCE

Though we may not always think about it, balance is essential to just about everything we do in our daily routines. From simply getting out of bed, leaning over to tie our shoes, or even walking to the mailbox, we need good balance to keep ourselves steady while performing normal tasks. Know why balance is important. Balance is the ability to control your body’s position, whether stationary or moving. It is a key component of fitness that many people neglect while developing their fitness regimen. Balance training is a great way to help your body recognize where it is and control movements in a given space. When the body knows where its limbs are in space — known as proprioception — it is able to produce smooth, controlled movements with fewer risks of injuries. LAUGH THERAPY

Reaction time and agility are also improved with balance training. The body learns how to quickly correct itself but not overcompensate and has the ability to quickly change direction effectively and efficiently. Though balance training is important for everyone, it is especially important for those who have problems due to illness, weakness, or dizziness. It allows them to overcome stiffness or unsteadiness and to develop an awareness of body segments and how to align them.

Consider trying the following exercises:

Standing with your weight on one leg and raising the other leg to the side or behind you. Putting one heel right in front of the other foot, as if you were walking a tightrope. Standing up and sitting down from a chair without using your hands. Walking while alternating knee lifts with each step. Stretching and gentle movement as part of yoga or tai chi.

These exercises help with balance. Balance training involves exercises to
