restaurant called Rey Azteca. You have to know one thing about my dad, though: He does not cook, so he’s an evening regular at Rey Azteca. Now, you may be wondering how my dad maintains his heath. It’s no easy task, especially as he ages! With Men’s Health Week running from June 10–16, I thought this would be the perfect time to showcase how he maintains his health! When my dad starts his day, rather than drinking coffee, he has a cup of Constant Comment decaf black tea and eats oatmeal with a pinch of brown sugar. Oatmeal is filled with soluble fiber, which helps improve intestinal health, lower cholesterol, and stabilize blood glucose levels.

If you can’t make a workout fit into your hectic schedule, then it doesn’t hurt to get creative! Simple things like parking in the spot farthest from the grocery store and taking the stairs at work can eat away at calories. Take my dad’s schedule: He starts his day by feeding the horses, which is a 3-mile walk round trip. This doesn’t even account for when he has to exercise them, ride them, or cut hay! He’s so active around the farm that I tease him by calling it his

For lunch, he will usually have a peanut butter and honey sandwich. My dad uses local honey specifically for its immune- boosting properties and the peanut butter for the protein. When he needs a snack, my dad usually goes for something salty, even a raw potato or a turnip! These are just some of the ways my dad tries to live healthily, but he’s still a sucker for salty chips and ice cream! What Are You Eating 3 LITTLE-KNOWN IMMUNE-BOO We all know fruits and vegetables have health benefits, but without knowing what they specifically do, it’s like working out just to bulk up. If you don’t know the purpose of certain exercises, then you won’t know where to start building muscle. If you read our previous editions, then you know we already wrote an article on superfoods. June is National Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Month, so there’s no better time to showcase some foods and beverages that can boost your immune system! Green Tea Tea, specifically green tea, is well known for being packed with nutrients, including L-theanine and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). L-theanine is an amino acid that helps fight inflammation and can improve brain function as well as sleep. EGCG boosts heart and brain health and acts as an antioxidant, which helps repair cells in your body. Due to the way green tea is brewed, it can retain a more concentrated amount of EGCG, making it a perfect early morning or late night drink. Yogurt Yogurt is reported to have many health benefits, including strengthening the immune system and maintaining weight.

Over the past several months, families, businesses, and nonprofits have had to navigate life in this challenging “new normal,” and it can be hard to support your favorite nonprofits when times are tough. Here are a few ways you can help these important entities, even when you don’t have resources to spare right now. Donate While many people donate generously during the holiday season, remember that nonprofits need donations throughout the year, and different nonprofits need different things. A monetary donation can often go a long way, but never feel obligated to give money, especially when your budget may be tight. Instead, consider cleaning out your closet. What clothes, shoes, or other accessories can you part with? What about dishware or small appliances? When you clean out your home and donate unused items, you benefit those in the community who need them most. Volunteer In a time of social distancing, volunteering may be discouraged, but nonprofits still need volunteers to operate. The good news is that many nonprofits need volunteers for positions that maintain social distance, such as driving. Food banks and kitchens need drivers to pick up donations or ingredients from donors and to deliver food to people in need, such as the elderly or those with disabilities. Advocate Even if you don’t have time or resources to give, you can become an advocate for important causes around your community. While it might not seem like much, sharing information about local nonprofits on social media can make a genuine difference. Nonprofits need exposure, which is greatly boosted through community support. Sharing useful information about nonprofits — or sharing their posts — increases their visibility so more people will take action. The Best Ways to Help Local Nonprofits in Challenging Times

Grilled Basil Chicken and Tomatoes You can’t go wrong with grilled chicken and tomatoes on a warm summer’s evening. It’s a simple recipe that packs a flavor punch.

INGREDIENTS

• 2 tbsp olive oil • 1 clove garlic • 1/2 tsp salt • 3/4 cup balsamic vinegar • 1/4 cup tightly packed fresh basil leaves

• 8 Roma

tomatoes • 4 boneless

skinless chicken breast halves (4 oz each)

DIRECTIONS

1. For marinade: In blender, combine olive oil, garlic, salt, vinegar, and basil. Cut 2 tomatoes into quarters and add to mixture. Cover and process until blended. Halve remaining tomatoes for grilling. 2. In bowl, combine chicken and 2/3 cup marinade. Cover and refrigerate for 1 hour. Reserve remaining marinade. 3. Heat grill to about 350–400 F. Lightly oil grates. Grill chicken until internal temperature reads 165 F, about 4–6 minutes per side. Grill tomatoes until lightly browned, about 2–4 minutes per side. Discard remaining marinade. 4. Serve chicken and tomatoes with reserved marinade.

MUSIC TO SOOTHE THE SOUL How Sinatra, Dolly Parton, and the Opera Impact Me Music is essential to our well-being. It can calm us down when we’re feeling stressed, inspire and motivate us, or cheer us up if we’re having a bad day. Since June 21 is World of Music Day, I thought I would share my favorite artists and why they mean so much to me! I listen to everything, but my favorites would have to be Frank Sinatra, Dolly Parton, and opera singers! That may seem like an odd variety, but they all help me navigate my schedule in different ways. Frank Sinatra What stood out (and still stands out) about Frank Sinatra was his entire persona and how he delivered lyrics. His music tells stories in such a calming and reflective way that it can relax me whenever I’m having a bad day. Additionally, if you’re ever on a long car ride, then I suggest playing any one of his albums and singing along! It’s one of my favorite things to do because you can easily get swept up in the music and lose track of time! Dolly Parton Dolly Parton is a true entertainer, and I love playing her songs whenever I’m feeling anxious. Particularly after

After a long day at the office, listening to opera helps me decompress, even for just a short time. Similar to Sinatra, opera music tells a story, but it’s refreshing due to its style. Most opera music is sung in a

foreign language, which makes it feel less like a song and more like an experience. When I close my eyes, the music takes me away from everything, and after a few minutes, I’m ready to tackle the next project in my way. So, what are some of your favorite genres or artists? My music tastes may be eclectic, but I’m always looking for new and exciting music!

A ‘SILVER’ BULLET ATTORNEYS GENERAL STAND FIRM AGAINST SNAKE OIL

Jim Bakker dominated headlines in the late 1980s with his legal troubles, and now the televangelist is facing a new lawsuit in 2020. The original story of Bakker’s fall begins on a TV set. Bakker and his wife at the time, Tammy Faye Messner, hosted the popular evangelical talk show “The PTL Club” from the mid-1970s to the late 1980s. However, their reign came crashing down when Bakker resigned after being accused of offering money to church secretary Jessica Hahn to cover up rape allegations. Bakker was later convicted of scamming thousands of viewers out of millions of dollars, and he spent several years in prison. Today, Bakker hosts “The Jim Bakker Show” and leads Morningside Church in Missouri. While freedom of religion is protected in the U.S., a recent promotion on Bakker’s show caught the attention of attorneys nationwide. In 2020, when the coronavirus pandemic found its way to the U.S, many people stocked up on emergency medical supplies. For some, this meant purchasing colloidal silver “cures” that

were promised to kill the virus. Supplements, pills, and oils with no scientific evidence of their efficacy were sold to consumers until the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) sent cease-and-desist orders to seven manufacturers in March 2020. One such product involved was Sherrill Sellman’s Silver Solution. Sellman, a self-described naturopathic doctor and mind-body psychologist who appeared on Bakker’s show on Feb. 12, proclaimed Silver Solution is a cure for the coronavirus. Bakker promoted the product and later sold it through his website. The Missouri and New York attorneys general caught wind of this scheme and immediately filed cease-and-desist orders, and even a lawsuit, against Bakker. NPR explains that Bakker and his church are in violation of state laws by “falsely promising consumers that Silver Solution can cure, eliminate, kill, or deactivate coronavirus.” Bakker stopped selling Silver Solution in mid-March 2020. Even as the lawsuit continues to move through the court system, the message is clear: The justice system is cracking down on the sale of snake oil.
