Remarkable and Important Books Of Absorbing Interest
A minister had a member who interrupted his services occasionally by shouting. He had such a wonderful appreciation •of God’s goodness that almost any reference to it would cause him to rejoice. The preacher persuaded him to remain in the pastor’s study during the morning service, and gave him a book on geology, thinking that would be dry enough to keep him in a sober state of mind. In the midst of the service the man was heard shouting in the study. When the preacher returned,: he said ffW lia t in the world could you find in that book to make you shout?’’ The man replied: “Why, look here, brother.. It says here that the ocean is eight miles deep in some places. The Bible says God will cast our sins into the depths of the sea. If a man wouldn’t shout about that, what would make him shout?” I BM J anuary 25, 1928 Text: John 10:9-10 • In his experiments ¡.with the cactus, of. the desert Burbank demonstrated many things qf.¡interest: amOng others that the; cactus lives while entirely separated from the soil. It may be hung; up on a branch ,.,qf ia tree,-and . will -there , live, dry, withered, unsightly. It lives, .feut at what a dying rate! Now that same bit of cactus that lives while dying may be taken down from its limb, embedded in the soil and watered under the kindly heat ..of a summer sun, when it will spring into life abundant. "¡Even so the Lord. Jesus said concerning life without God,-“I came that ye might have life, and have it more abundantly.” It is His tp. communicate the-life without which no man can he holy in his relation to God or righteous in his, conduct toward man. 1 Pliny tells of the elephant, who, when taken to the pool to drink, saw himself reflected in the water, and lashed it with his trunk in consequencjv stirring up the mud to hide his confusion. The reason'skeptics hate God’s-Word is because it rebukes their sin, searches their hearts; and discovers, their innate corruption. Heb. 4:12 is the only place in Scripture where the word “critic” occurs; and it refers to the Word criticizing the sinner, not the sinner criticizing the Word. The skeptical mind, is the ¡progeny of moral or spiritual obliquity, not of mental acumen: * A pocket Testament, dropped from an English warship in a Japanese harbor in 1854, was the beginning of another endless chain, reaching to the present day and -beyond. A Japanese general, Murata, who was suspiciously watching the movements of the alien vessels, picked up the little book. But he could not- read it. A Dutch interpreter informed him that it told about God and Christ—which only increased his perplexity, At last he secured from China a translation of the strange book. He read and was profoundly impressed. Risking death, since the Christian religion was strictly forbidden in Japan, he and his brother came to Dr. Verbeck for baptism. Their distinguished rank added to their influence upon others, and there are many Christians in Japan today who owe their religion to the Testament fished out of the waters of Naga saki harbor.
