ReCycle Action marks fifth year in new home

Further back inside the warehouse work area, a conveyor belt moves glass bottles, tin cans, newspaper, and other recyclablematerials for sorting by fast-moving hands into their proper bins for later packing and shipping. Just ano- ther typical day for the staff at the ReCycle Action facility. But thatThursday was not an ordinary day at all. The last day of June marked a special fifth anniversary celebration for ReCycle Action’s presence in its present spacious 4200-square-foot building setup on Spence Road.The Hawkesbury-based regional recy- cling operation has been in business for eight years since it began over on Tupper Street, but the fifth anniversary celebration marks not just five years in the current location but also the success of a sound business plan, aimed at both helping meet the recycling needs of communities throughout Prescott- Russell, and also providing a growing source of jobs for people whose physical or social challenges make it difficult for them to find rewarding employment. “It grew fast,” said Robert Lessard, opera- tions director. “Nowwe have 45 employees.” ReCycle Action is part of Groupe Convex, a regional social service agency dedicated
to helping provide “decent and productive jobs” for its clients. The recycling program began eight years ago, limited to doing blue box collection for Hawkesbury, East Hawkes- bury, and Champlain Township. It has since expanded its operations to both blue box collections for Alfred-Plantagenet Township, the Village of Casselman, and The Nation Municipality, and it operates a farm plastic recycling project, with the support of both Prescott-Russell’s farmcommunity and also the United Counties of Prescott-Russell. “We recycle about 100 tonnes a week now,” said Lessard, adding that the company supplies recyclablematerials like clear glass, tin, newsprint for pulping, various kinds of plastic, used cloth and such, to various recycler markets both in Canada and abroad. “We represent a very significant economic investment for Hawkesbury,” Lessard said, adding that includes both the wages paid to ReCycle Action staff and also the revenue coming back into the town through sales of materials to recycling outfits. Since its beginnings, ReCycle Action’s appetite for recyclable materials has ex- panded to include white moulded packing Styrofoam (but not the “packing peanuts” yet or coloured Styrofoam), and electronic waste like old computers, radios, televisions, and such.These e-waste items are sorted out and boxed up for shipping to the specialty recy- cling markets for disassembly and salvage of the valuable components.The company’s e-waste collection program began in 2011 and last year ReCycle Action shipped out more than 150 tonnes of electronic waste to salvaging outfits. “That’s a lot,” Lessard said, adding that every bit of recyclable waste ReCycle Action sells to a recycler/salvager means much less non-biodegradable materials ending up in local landfills in Prescott-Russell.
