o f the boys runs over to the corner store and buys several small loaves o f bread for their breakfast. Breakfast in Cuba is very simple. It consists o f bread, (usually no butter as butter is very expensive here and there are no butter substitutes) and a cup o f hot milk with coffee in it . . . The latter is very delicious and I’m sure that you would like it too. A fter breakfast some o f the older boys go off to school. Luisa doesn’t get to go to school because she is the only one who can help her mother with all o f the housework and to take care of the smaller children. I’m sure that she would like very much to go because it isn’t much fun to stay home all the time and not learn to read and write. During the morning Luisa is busy helping about the house. The Cubans are very good housekeepers. The tile floors are mopped every day with a disinfectant and you don’t see any cobwebs in Cuban homes, no matter how humble they may be. The big meal comes at noon in Cuba. Luisa’s mother knows how to make many delicious Cuban dishes but, as in most homes, their main diet consists of rice, black beans, fried bananas, sweetpotatoes, yucca (a root vege table) , pork, bread and crackers. These are all well flavored with lard and garlic— it tastes very good— but is not very healthful and many, many people suffer with liver trouble because o f too much fatty and starchy foods. After dinner it is customary to have a little rest or “ siesta.” This is a very good custom as this is the hottest part o f the day and after this rest one is able to accomplish much more during the remainder o f the day. Also because the nights are cool folks usually stay up quite late at night. All o f the stores are always closed from twelve until two in the afternoon. Sad to say many o f the children don’t like to take their nap and as a result their cheeks are pale and they are not healthy because o f lack o f rest. About 4 o’clock in the afternoon is bath-time in Cuba. Everyone is very careful not to bathe for at least 2 V 2 hours after eating. It seems that in this tropical climate the food stays longer in the stomach and in the summer here there are many deaths from people going in swimming too soon after eating. I really don’t know how all nine o f the children in Luisa’s family get their shower every day (I really think some of the boys hide out part o f the time), but one can always see Luisa in a nice clean dress taking baby sister for a walk in the afternoon before the evening meal. This walk or “ paseando” is very customary in Cuba and the streets are full o f people from the late afternoon until late at night enjoying the cool evening breezes. On Saturdays Luisa’s afternoons are a little different for she usually gets to come to our house for Good News Club. It was here that she received the Lord Jesus as her Saviour and now week by week she is learning more o f the precious truths o f God’s Word. Don’t forget to pray for Luisa and fo r the many other boys and girls here in Cuba who have already received the Lord Jesus into their hearts. *Betty and Edward E. Case graduated from, the Bible Institute in 19US, and are missionaries in Cuba.

Open the Door fo r the Children Open the door for the children, Tenderly gather them in,— In from the highways and hedges, In from the places of sin; Some are so young and so helpless, Some are so hungry and cold; Open the door for the children, Gather them into the fold.

Would you be- j lieve it if I told you that Luisa- has nine brothers and only one little baby sister ? Let’s go visit them over in their big yellow house on the Corner. It’s about six o’clock in the morning; the roosters are crowing all over town and the children are waking up one by one. Luisa gets baby sister up and dresses her. One
