September 3, 1950 Peter's Power

WORKED WONDERS AFTER PRAY ER.” It was not until Peter became a man of prayer that he became a man of power. You and I can learn an important lesson from Peter. If we are to say as Peter “We ought to [must] obey God rather than men” (Acts 5:29), we must be people of prayer. C— -------- September 10, 1950 - Marred and Made Objects: Ceramic clay, a mold and a ceramic model which has been tired. (These can be secured from a local art teacher. If possible get the mold of a man’s face. Have the clay molded before presenting to the class.) Lesson: This clay which I hold in my hand reminds me of John Mark, the young man who went with Paul and Barnabas on the first missionary jour ney. All went well until the journey became difficult and dangerous. Of this time we read, “ And John departed from them and returned to Jerusalem” (Acts 13:13, R.V.). As I drop this clay to the floor it becomes marred, reminding us that John Mark allowed his life to be marred by not going all the way with Paul and Barnabas. Not only was Mark’s life marred by this mistake, but the fellowship of Paul and Barnabas was marred as well be cause of it. We read, “ And the conten tion was so sharp between them, that they departed asunder one from the other: and so Barnabas took Mark, and sailed unto Cyprus” (Acts 15:39). We are very thankful that while Mark’s life was marred, he did not let it remain in this condition. He became so faithful that Paul could say “ Take Mark, and bring him with thee: for he is profitable to me for the ministry” (2 Tim. 4:11).

Lesson: When we see an airplane, a tractor or a battleship we immediately think of great power. While such things suggest great power, the power which they represent is not the greatest. On this piece of paper we see the word “ POWER.” This is a power which is greater than the kind we have been talking about. It is the power which Peter had. He and John were going to the temple to pray. A lame man was near the temple gate begging. Peter said, “ Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk . . . And he leaping up stood, and walked, and entered with them into the temple . . . and praising God” (Acts 3 :6,8). Another example of power in the life of Peter was when he and John had been forbidden to speak and teach in the name of Jesus. We read, “ But Peter and John answered and said unto them, Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge ye. For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard” (Acts 4:19,20). If we open the flaps of this piece of paper, we shall see how it could be that Peter, the man who once was a coward and denied his Lord, could be so bold and powerful. We read, “ PETER A U G U S T , 1 9 5 0
