AS ALWAYS IN MARCH, when the Irish and all their friends celebrate their national holiday of St. Patrick‘s Day, Belgrade is al- so decked out in green and joins the joyous merrymakers. Over the course of ten days, we will have op- portunities to enjoy a selection of Irish films, an award-winning thea- tre play, a photography exhibition, conversations with Irish directors, writers and journalists, and to dis- cover more about the Emerald Isle and its culture... Opening this year’s Belgrade Irish Festival is Irish Film Week, which begins with a screening of the film My Left Foot, for which Daniel Day-Lewis won the Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role. This film’s director, Jim Sheridan, will al- so be the guest of Belgrade for the festival. As a famous Irish screen- writer, producer and director, his films have received 16 Oscar nom- inations and he is also well known for the film In the Name of the Fa- ther (another starring the inimitable Day-Lewis). Sheridan will formally open the festival in the building of the Yugoslav Cinematheque Film Ar- chives on Friday, 8 th March. Another exclusive guest of the Serbian capital will be Dublin-based theatre company Fishamble. They are coming to Belgrade with the play King, nominated for the Pick of the Fringe award at the famous theatre festival in Edinburgh. The main ac- tor, Pat Kinevane, received the most prestigious British acting award - the
Sir Laurence Olivier Award - a few years ago. On stage, Kinevane por- trays a loner called Luther, named in honour of Dr Martin Luther King Jr., who is preparing for his own ma- jor performance as an impersonator of another king: Elvis Presley. You can watch this play at Bitef Theatre on 14 th and 15 th March. Through two thematic sections, as many as 15 films will be screened that celebrate the lives and achieve- ments of Irish creators, including major film stars like Peter O‘Toole and Richard Harris, musician and ac- tivist Sinéad O’Connor, but also con- temporary pop icons like Panti Bliss. Another guest of this year’s BIF will be writer, filmmaker and theatre di- rector Alan Gilsenan, a former chair- man of the Irish Film Institute, while Belgrade will also welcome Theo Dor- gan, who has been dubbed “Ireland’s greatest living poet”. He will recite his poetry and talk with the audi- ence at Association KROKODIL. The BIF will also present the exhibition Irish Travellers by photographer Jo- seph-Phillippe Bevillard, which por- trays the life of the Irish nomads that represent an ethnic minority and are known collectively as Irish travellers. As always, the festival pro- gramme will be accompanied by par- ties at Irish pubs, joint viewing of the international rugby union matches between England and Ireland and between Ireland and Scotland, as well socialising with Belgrade’s long- time Irish residents.
