Water protection signs posted throughout the region

A new kind of road sign is popping up in communities, both urban and rural, all around Eastern Ontario. The sign points to passing motorists that they are driving through an area where there is a vulnerable drinking water source. The South Nation Conservation Autho- rity (SNC) and the Raisin River Conserva- New improved M & M opens with food bank fundraiser Proprietors and M & M franchise owners, Alain and Nicole Bernard, are combining the reopening of their renovated premises with a pre-Christmas fundraiser effort for the Rockland food bank. The Bernards celebrate the 20th anniversary of their M & M Food Market franchise in Rockland, this November 19th weekend, with an official grand opening of the expanded and renovated premises. An official ribbon-cutting takes place at 10 a.m., with Mayor Guy Desjardins officiating, and throughout the day, the Bernards have committed to donating $1.50 for every pur- chase in the store, to the Clarence-Rockland Help Centre to help support its food bank program. Residents of Clarence-Rockland are also reminded that the first weekend of December will see dozens of volunteers going door-knocking for the Annual Clarence- Rockland Christmas Hamper Drive to help provide a merry Christmas to those in need– Gregg Chamberlain

This is part of the efforts of all regional Source Water Protection Committees in Ontario to highlight water protection and conservation. “The goal is to increase public awareness,” stated JohnMesman, SNC communications liaison, “as well as educate local landowners on vulnerable areas and possible threats to drinking water.” Both the SNC and RRC are working with local municipalities on the signage place- ment.The new highway notice sign displays a water glass and a water droplet, in blue, against a white background. Another part of the signage program involves placing “boater awareness” signs at areamarinas, to remind boat owners and operators of the need for care to avoid any accidental spillage of gasoline, oil, sewage, or other substances in area lakes, rivers, and streams which may also serve as drin- king water sources as well as habitat for fish, waterfowl and some animals. ATM theft OPP have an ATM theft case in Rockland. Police received a call on Oct. 30 about money stolen from an ATM in a local business.
