ATC ‘22 ARBORPALOOZA: EXPLORING THE WIDE WORLD OF TREES

What Happens When 14 Arborists Appraise the Same 10 Trees? Tuesday, October 4, 2022 | 10:10 am to 11:10 am (1 CEU) Presenter: James Komen Location: Bay 6 The CTLA Trunk Formula Method is an industry-standard tool for appraising large trees. Appraisals are necessary for insurance claims, dispute resolution, justify - ing tree maintenance budgets, setting construction bond amounts for tree pro - tection, and imposing fines for violation of tree protection ordinances to name a few. In a study published in Arboriculture & Urban Forestry, 14 certified arborists independently appraised the same 10 trees, and the results of their appraisals were analyzed. In the results, the attributes that had the highest variance among appraisers were the Trunk Area and the Condition Rating. The study also identi - fied four key elements of error involved in the appraisal process: personal value error, personal observation error, measurement error, and systematic error. Each of these elements of error will be discussed in this presentation, accompanied by recommendations for reducing error in the field in the participants’ own practices. The intention of this research and presentation is to open a dialogue among the arborist community about the best practices for applying existing appraisal tech - niques.
