Lessons of My Father My Dad’s Persistence, Drive, and Constant Support

M y dad has always been a man of many skills, the kind of person who, when presented with an obstacle, will do everything in his power to learn how to conquer it. His independence, and the sheer determination he applies to everything he does, have had a massive influence on my personality and approach to life, not to mention everything he’s done for my siblings, mom, and me over the years. A long time ago, my father was a family attorney in Argentina. It was a stable career, but he felt compelled to serve his community in a more voluntary role. He had his eye on missionary work and began to feel that he could have a greater positive impact as a hospital administrator. So, he traveled the 5,500 plus miles from his birth country to the U.S. to attend a hospital administration master’s program at Loma Linda University. The missionary work ended up falling through, and it turned out that after working as a hospital administrator for a year, it wasn’t for him. Alongside school, he had started a separate pursuit: flipping houses. The process was pretty straightforward. We’d move into a new house which was usually a bit of a fixer-upper. Then, my dad would improve the home in order to flip it for profit. He studied independently so that he could do the plumbing, tile, drywall, and electrical. The breadth of his knowledge was ever-expanding.

was far from what he loved to do, but he kept at it for eight years, just so he could put us all through school.

Later, he went back into real estate, acquiring a broker’s license and an independent contractor license so he could subcontract out work for his properties. The whole time he kept his multidisciplinary, hands-on approach, never letting anyone else do the work that he had the time and skill to complete himself. My dad has worked harder in his life than almost anyone I’ve met, instilling in me a work ethic that has gotten me to the point I’m at today. My dad’s fiercely independent spirit was a big influence on my decision to open up my own physical therapy practice. Both my parents have been endlessly supportive in everything my siblings and I have chosen to pursue over the years, passing on their innate positivity and can-do attitudes. With June 18 being Father’s Day, I thought I’d keep in the vein of the last issue about my mom and recognize my dad this month. At 72, he’s still going strong. Gratitude is difficult to convey in a one-page article, but I hope he knows just how thankful I am for everything he’s done for all of us in the Manrique family.

With four kids on the steady march to college, the family finances necessitated another change of career for my father. He ended up purchasing and running an automotive dismantling company, of all things, picking parts off cars bought at auction, and selling used cars. This

Get to know Nadia!

4. Speaking of pets, I had many interesting pets in college, including many rats and a duck named Daphne. Surprisingly, they all got along! 5. I love Motown music, and I’m super excited to see The Isley Brothers and The Commodores at the OC Fair this summer for my birthday!

Nadia has been working at Focus Physical Therapy for almost six years, and she is fantastic! Everyone who’s ever been here has seen her wonderful smile and great positive attitude. She is determined and hardworking, and she likes to have fun. She started here as a PT aide, helping with the back office and assisting patients with their exercises. During that time she became certified in Applied Functional Science (CAFS), so that she could better assist our patients and clients. About two years ago, she transitioned to working at the front desk, where her infectious smile greets everyone who comes through the door. Recently, she became our office manager, making sure that we all stay on track. We and our patients are truly blessed to have her working with us. Here are some fun facts you may not know about Nadia. 1. I’ve been playing pool for many, many years, and I recently joined an APA Pool League. So on Tuesday nights, you can usually find me competing at dive bars in Dana Point or San Clemente. 2. I also enjoy painting in my free time, and even though I already have a closet full of supplies, I can’t walk out of Michael’s without something new! (It’s a problem.) Five intresting facts that you may not know about me ...

3. I recently adopted two cats, Leo and Piper. They were shy at first, but now we’re friends and can’t get enough of each other. :)

SUCCESS STORIES

“My experience at Focus has been nothing short of magnificent. I presented with a partial tear in my left rotator cuff of my shoulder, with significant disability to the point that I feared surgery would be necessary, because my shoulder was essentially frozen, and the pain gently impacted my daily activities. Julian worked very closely with me, and gradually, over a period of several months, I began to experience relief from the shoulder and an increase in my range of motion. Julian and all the staff were always very positive and encouraging during my therapy sessions. Julian persevered with a combination of various types of manipulation and stretches until I was able to realize significant improvement. I am extremely grateful to Julian and the rest of the Focus staff for all their efforts. It is a blessing to no longer have to deal with the pain from my shoulder — and to have my range of motion that I was without for so long. In conclusion, I want to thank Julian and the Focus staff for allowing me to return to my previous quality of life!”

7 TIPS TO AVOID NECK PAIN

AND THE NO. 1 BEST EXERCISE FOR NECK PAIN

Whether your neck pain is from a chronic condition or you’ve just woken up with a stiff neck, these tips should help you experience less pain. 1. Sleep on your back (ideal) or on your side, but avoid sleeping on your stomach. 2. Make sure your computer monitor is at eye level. 3. Stop looking down when texting or surfing the internet. Put your phone away (never thought I’d be saying this). 4. Exercise and stretch — keeping your body moving is a must. 5. Keep yourself hydrated. Drink lots of water (the discs in your neck are mostly made up of water). 6. Carry weight evenly (backpacks, purses, luggage, etc.). 7. Maintain good posture (avoid slumping, especially when sitting, driving, or watching TV). A probable suspect of neck pain that often gets missed is the thoracic spine. To see the No. 1 best exercise to avoid or improve neck pain, visit us on Facebook at facebook.com/ focusphysicaltherapyrsm and click on the ‘No. 1 best exercise for neck pain’ video.

Neck pain is a very common complaint that, at any given time, affects about 13 percent of American adults (women more than men). Most of us have, at least one point, woken up with a stiff neck, or had an injury or event that resulted in neck pain.

Neck pain is usually the result of strain to the soft tissues (muscles, tendons, and/or ligaments) of the neck (cervical spine). This may result from underlying neck problems, such as arthritis, disc degeneration, poor posture, or trauma, but it often occurs for no obvious or identifiable reason.
