Points and Problems 1. "He departed out of Haran" (Gen. 12:4). God had promised to bless Abram. But the blessing was con nected with the land to which God had called him. Not Haran but Ca naan was the place of blessing. To stay in Haran was to manifest only partial obedience. He must come to walk over the hills and valleys of Palestine. Many Christians wonder why. the full blessing of God is not upon their lives. The reason is that they have chosen to stay in Haran in stead of going all the way to Canaan. 2. "And the Canaanite was then in the land" (Gen. 12:6). This meant a real test for Abram. The Canaanites were idolatrous, superstitious, pro fane—utterly foreign to the life God expected His servant to live. Yet God had told Abram to come to this land. A truth is presented, here that God’s people of every generation need to recognize. The certainty that the fol lowers of the Lord are in the place of blessing does not mean that there will be no conflict. There may be “Canaanites” of all kinds to test the reality of one’s faith .' It was so in apostolic days. It is so today. The Christian needs to beware of the Ca naanite in the land. 3. "The Lord appeared unto Abram" (Gen. 12:7). We have here the first visible appearance of God to man. Be fore this only the divine voice had been heard. This appearance is known as a “theophany.” There were other theophanies later on. These were all manifestations in preparation for the time when God would become incar nate in flesh in the person of His Son. The response on Abram’s part was “an altar.” To see God as He really is, is to worship Him. 4. "There builded he an altar . » • and pitched his tent" (Gen. 12:7, 8). These two things, the altar and the tent, set forth the two outstanding features of Abram’s life. The altar tells us that he was a worshiper of God. It speaks of sacrifice. (The He brew word literally means “place of slaughter.” Abram worshiped in the blood-sprinkled way. The tent tells us that he was a stranger in this world. He was surrendered to a pil grim life* He looked for a city that hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God. He is like every true Christian in these two respects — a worshiper of God, a pilgrim in this world. The experience of Abram and of Christians of all ages is well de scribed by the beautiful lines of the hymn: “ I am a stranger here, within a foreign land, My home is far away, upon a golden strand.”
