For the Children W hen A braham G ave U p F irst C hoice G enesis 13:1-12 MEMORY VERSE: “As ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise” (Lk. 6:31). AIM: To teach that giving others first place is an important way of showing our love for the Lord Jesus. APPROACH: Have you ever heard anyone say, “Well, I won’t play un less I can be It,” or, “If I can’t have this piece, I don’t want any” ? A boy or girl who truly loves the Lord Jesus will bb willing to give others first place. LESSON STUDY: You will remember that Abraham, “the friend of God,” Sarah, his lovely wife, and Lot, their nephew, had left their home across the sea and at God’s command had journeyed to a strange country. After Abraham had lived in the new coun try for several years, he became very rich. He owned many cattle (cows) and had much silver and gold. Be cause there was no food one year in the new country, Abraham ancl his family visited another land. When they returned, they \yent to the very place where they had placed their tent and built the altar upon which to worship God, By this time Lot also had become very rich. He had so many flocks that the land was not big enough for both his animals and those of his Uncle Abraham. The servants of the two men began to quarrel about which land their animals could use. One day Abraham called Lot to him and said that he did not want the servants to quarrel and; be unhappy. Because there was so much land that could be used, Abraham asked Lot to choose which he wanted, the land to the right hand or to the left hand. Lot was a young man; Abra ham was old. Instead of being kind to his uncle who had done so much for him, and giving him the best land for his animals, Lot was selfish and took the best land. Because Abraham was “the friend of God” he did not complain; he took the land which Lot did not want. Surely the Heavenly Father was well pleased with His friend, who was willing to give an other first choice. Like Abraham, God would like for us to do to others as we want them to do to us. There is a motto which you will find hanging on the walls in some Chris tian homes which reads: “ God first, others second, myself last.” Would it not be a fine motto to learn? God would be pleased if we would put it into practice in our lives.

THEGREAT GAMBLE One of the most brilliant men of all time was Pascal the scientist and mathematician. At sixteen he wrote a profound geometric treatise on cross« sections of the cone; he studied the cycloid curve, laid the foundations of calculus.^ experi mented with hydromatics and air' pressure and improved the barometer. Pascal’s friends complained of their gambling Josses and begged him to apply his mathematical skill to “beating” the roulette wheel. Out of his investigations, the mathemat ical branches of probability curve and permutations re sulted. His research also led him to philosophize on the spinning wheel of life at which all must play, in his “Pen- sees’* we have a remarkable autobiography of a soul seek ing personal salvation. Pascal thus mediated: “Sup posing I put my money on the proposition that God does not exist? If God does not exist, I lose nothing. I win annihilation just as I thought I would. But supposing God is, then I lose ail. i win hell which I greatly fear. On the other hand, if I put my money on the proposition that God does exist, what are my chances? If God does not ex ist, I lose nothing, but at least i win the merits of a good, de cent, Christian life. But if God does exist, I win all. My best bet then is to bet that God is. i have two to one chances to win.” Thank God that through the finished work of our Lord Jesus Christ our salvation has passed from the realm of chance to that of certainty! — Bernard Ramm.
