Vol.3 Wax Poetics - Issue 02 ('90s Icon Edition)

C. Henry Woods Troupe “The Stranger” (Enyx) 1976

This is another record that has gotten real big lately, but I used to play this back in the day. This is a white-label promo 7-inch, but most of the kids are playing this bootleg that came out on 12-inch, and it sounds kind of distorted and not very clear. The bassline is so driving—almost like a bass solo with a track behind it. It’s really heavy.

This Japanese picture sleeve is really rare, even the LP [ Having A Party ] never shows up. I picked this up a couple of years ago when I was out here in Japan. It’s ‘disco- ridiculous,’ and I always know I can do trades with it, so I never leave it at the store. The Pointer Sisters “Bring Your Sweet Stuff Home to Me” b/w “Save the Bones for Henry Jones” (Blue Thumb) 1976

Blue Image “Holdin’ on to a Memory” b/w “Mr. Spaceman” (Sound Machine) 1979

This is a rare, trippy record everybody has been trippin’ out on lately. It reminds me of “On and On” [by Jesse Saunders], which sampled Player [1]’’s “Space Invaders,” [and] which they call the first house record. Chip E. and Jesse Saunders have been going through that fight over who did the first house record forever. I’m like,“Why do y’all care? Both of you were around since the beginning!”

Ben and the Tight Squeeze Band “Thumping for You” b/w “Brandon’s Song” (Earth World) 1981

This one here was going for, like, four thousand dollars. But certain records, when you hear it, you gotta have it. The track starts off kind of dark, but it’s really high tech, and some real nice disco.
