When It Comes to a Successful Recovery Communication Is Key

In the past few editions of our newsletter, we’ve highlighted success stories — stories of patients, who, both with our help and through their own determination, have regained a sense of control over their lives that they would not have had otherwise. We share these stories because we want you to know there is hope for any of our patients to return to a normal life after an amputation. However, that doesn’t mean the healing process or living as an amputee is without struggles and setbacks. Recovering from an amputation or a setback, while rewarding in the end, can be a difficult and frustrating process. There will be days where it might seem like the work isn’t worth it, and even days where it feels like you’re starting all over. However, by and large, our patients come out of those hard times better and stronger than ever. If I had to put the key to our patients’ recovery into one word, it would be: communication. We do our very best to communicate with you as much as we can about your condition and your recovery. Open communication with your CPO, with me, and with others at our office is a critical part of ensuring you heal and get back to a normal day-to-day life. We want to hear any questions or concerns you might have about your prosthesis, any frustrations you may have, and any changes in your condition that have made things more difficult for you. The reason we want you to communicate with us is mainly because prostheses are tricky. Many times, changes in your weight can affect how your prosthesis fits. So, if you go through lifestyle changes that might affect your weight, such as a new diet, a new exercise routine, new medications (meds can sometimes affect your weight), or lifestyle changes in some other way that affect how your prosthesis fits, please let us know. That way, we can anticipate the change, keep your recovery on course, and keep frustrating setbacks to a minimum.

I also want you to feel free to reach out to me

directly about issues besides those directly related to your prosthesis.

My goal is that we create the best patient experience possible

for you. If we ever fall short, I’d like to know about it. For example, if you aren’t

connecting well with your practitioner, there’s always an option to switch to another provider in our office. We will never frown on anyone doing that, and you won’t hurt anyone’s feelings. All of us, including our CPOs, recognize that, while consistency in your care is a good thing, connecting with your practitioner is also important.

For questions about your prosthesis or to let us know about any lifestyle changes you think might interfere with the fit of your prosthesis, give our office a call at (208) 377-4024. If you have other questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me directly at Stephanie@apoidaho.com or text or call (208) 985-5190. –Stephanie McDonald

THANKING OUR VETERANS ON VETERANS DAY

Why They Deserve Our Gratitude

While Thanksgiving and preparing for the upcoming holiday season might overshadow the month of November, we at Advanced Prosthetics & Orthotics want to make sure we don’t forget one very important day in the midst of all the festivities: Veterans Day. On Nov. 11, our nation will have the opportunity to honor and celebrate the service of our veterans (FYI, Veterans Day celebrates veterans dead or alive) for several reasons, a few of which are listed below. Thank you for being willing. Serving in our military is a choice — one that relatively few people make. We’re thankful that the brave men and women in our armed forces answered the call to serve and defend the freedom of people in the United States and elsewhere. Thank you for sacrificing your time. Every minute our veterans served was a minute where they were potentially away from their families in a dangerous part of the world, putting their lives on the line. It’s not time that everyone is willing to give up, and because our veterans stepped forward, the rest of us can rest easy. Thank you for your hard work and leadership. Training for and serving in the armed forces is rigorous and takes an inordinate amount of hard work and determination. It is not a job for the faint of heart, mind, or body. The men and women in our military must act well under pressure and be able to lead themselves and others well. Thank you for helping us not take our freedom for granted. More than anyone, our veterans understand the value of the freedom we enjoy in the United States. They know the sacrifices necessary for freedom to flourish. We may never understand everything they went through, but we can understand the value their sacrifice made possible. If you’re a veteran reading this, thank you for your service. If you aren’t a veteran, but you know one, find a way to appreciate them this Veterans Day, whether through writing a letter, visiting them in person, or just calling them to say how much you appreciate all they’ve done.

TOP 5 HEALTHY LIFE HACKS TO HAVE AN AWESOME MORNING

Getting your day started with coffee isn't always enough. Sometimes, you need to give yourself an extra boost, especially when you have little energy or trouble focusing. For an awesome start to your day, here are five tips to get you going right off the bat. Wake up 5 minutes early. What’s the power of five minutes? It can be more than you think. Spend this time doing simple breathing exercises or a quick meditation so you can get focused for the rest of the day. If that’s not your style, you can prepare a quick to-do list for your day ahead. Either way, it’s always nice to have a little extra time for yourself without losing too much sleep. Start with green tea, then coffee. A cup of coffee at 7 a.m. can leave you burned out by 10 a.m. Try swapping it with green tea for a more gentle wake-up call. After that, you can brew your favorite coffee to keep you going strong. This practice also might help you consume less caffeine overall!

Take a quick morning walk — and have your meetings on the go.

Morning meetings can make us want to fall asleep again. Don’t spend all of them sitting down if you don’t have to! Not only will morning walks help you wake up, but they can also add some extra physical activity to your day. Write in your journal. Who says you have to journal at the end of the day when you’re tired and ready to sleep? You can journal in the morning about what happened yesterday and the things you’re looking forward to that day. Journaling can remind you of your daily goals and motivate you to stick to your commitments. Pack your lunch (or snacks!). Staying on track with your goals starts with having the energy to do them. Plan a healthy balance of fats, vegetables, carbohydrates, and proteins. This can be as simple as assembling dips, carrots, wraps, and salads each morning.

It’s time to try these tactics to jump-start your day!

How to Safely Navigate Black Friday and Beyond

Park in well-lit areas. To guard against potential thieves who still care about social distancing, always park somewhere easy to see in the dark. Parking areas with minimal lighting and security are a lot more tempting for thieves who might try to break into your car and steal the expensive gifts you’ve already purchased. In any case, you should also hide your gifts in the trunk, where no one can see them and try to get at them. Shop online instead. While you might be used to buying all your gifts from the store in person, this year might be the best year for moving your whole shopping process online. That way you can ensure you stay healthy for the holiday season, avoid potential thieves, and get all your shopping done from the comfort of your home. However, before you start your cyber shopping spree, take a few precautions. Make sure the sites you’re shopping are secure (look for a closed padlock icon and a URL beginning with “https”), only use one credit or debit card for purchases, and only buy from online retailers you’re familiar with.

While Black Friday itself most likely won’t be as hectic as it has been in previous years,

with many major retailers spreading their major holiday sales out over a few months to

reduce in-store traffic, stores may still be busier than normal right after Thanksgiving. So, if you’re planning on braving any major

retailers on Black Friday, or on any evening during the holiday shopping season for that matter, remember to follow a few key safety tips.

Never shop with lots of cash. When you flash a large stack of bills at the cash register after

purchasing your Christmas gifts, you make yourself a target for potential pickpockets. Instead, shop with a credit or debit card. That way, if your wallet or purse does get stolen, all you’ll have to do is make a quick cancellation call to your bank.

It’s easy to get caught up in the holiday bustle. But if you take these precautions beforehand, you’ll make it through with your gift list all checked off no problem.

4 Top 2020 Home Trends to Make Your Space Extra Comfortable

TOP 2020 TRENDS FOR MAKING ‘HOME SWEET HOME’ EVEN COZIER

Comfort food isn't the only comforting thing trending this year. With everyone spending more time at home, many have found creative ways of making their home cozier,

Also, in one study, Cornell University’s Food and Brand Lab found that participants snacked on double the calories when standing in a messy kitchen compared to a clean one. You can feel like you’re someplace far, far away — yet, still at home — if you’re surrounded by lush, leafy green plants. Consider classic blue. An inviting color can have the same comforting effect on your mood as a warm blanket can have on your body. This might be why the 2020 Pantone Color of the Year is classic blue — “a shade reminiscent of the sky at dusk.” After this crazy year, a calming, deep, sophisticated blue is perfect for our homes. Pick up a dark blue blanket as a practical accent piece or add a fresh coat of paint to any space or furniture item. A lovely shade of blue can instantly make your space look more peaceful, especially with a beautiful contrasting white accent or trim.
