OCTOBER 25 We May Always Count on God

from falling is our second. God must do both. His power accomplished the first; it is only His power that can accomplish the second. We are “kept by the power of God” ; “He will keep.” Faith does not look in the direction of human effort for this deliverance, but in the direction of di vine strength. The saints cannot keep their own feet from stumbling. It is not their watchfulness oi* their .spiritual sagacity that is the secret of their safety against failure in the walk. It is the power of God. . . . Faith is the link that unites di- .vine energy with human inability. —S elected . OCTOBER 24 W atching for th e Coming Day ‘‘Watchman, what of the night?" (Isa. 21 : 11 ). These words are to be understood as coming, not from the Lord’s people, but from one on the enemy’s side. “He calleth to me out of Seir.” The answer to that question is twofold. It depends upon which side the inquirer is who asks if. “The watchman said, The morning com- eth,” to the people of God, “and also the night,” to those who are His enemies. . ... It is for the coming day that the believer is looking . . . . We may shortly hear the summons, “Behold, the bridegroom com- eth; go ye out to meet him” (Matt. 25:6). —Alliance Weekly. So near at hand, the hope of His appearing Grows brighter every day; And though around thy path the shadows linger, He is not far away. At thy right hand, that thou shalt not be moved, He walks in tender grace: And swift the clouds may part, and thou beloved Behold His face.

"When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord shall lift up a standard against him" (Isa. 59:19). The enemy coming in “like a flood” 1 It is a startling metaphor. Suddenly, with out warning, a dam or embankment gives way far up in the hills, and a whole lakeful of water comes pouring down into the quiet unsuspecting valley. Such is the metaphor, and there is abundant evidence of its aptness to human experience ih;con flict with evil. It threatens us like an over charged reservoir or lake which menaces the valley beneath . . . These times are more than a match for unaided human might . . . It is best instantly to exclaim with good Jehoshaphat, when he was in a similar strait: “We have no might against this great company that cometh against u s; neither know we what to do: but our eyes are upon thee.” We may always count on God.—C. G. M. OCTOBER 26 T he Fount of Hope "In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, I f any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink” (John 7:37). No other distinction is made but that of thirst. No waiting or preparation is so much as hinted at. Drinking represents a reception for which no fitness is required. Sinful lips may touch the stream of di vine love; they cannot pollute it, but shall themselves be purified. Jesus is the Fount of Hope. Dear reader, hear the dear Re deemer’s loving voice as He cries to each 6f us: “If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.” —C harles I I addon S purgeon . Life, like a fountain rich and free, Springs from the presence of the Lord; And in Thy light our souls shall see The blessings promised in Thy Word. wS-Daily Food.
