ICE USA held its first show in Lou- isville, Kentucky, last week, relocated from its previous location in Orlan-

by Greg Kishbaugh

N ilpeter held an Open House,March 28,at its U.S.headquarters in Cincinnati, Ohio. Celebrating the centennial of its found- ing, the company welcomed more than 80 attendees to the event, which looked at the many changes affecting the packaging indus- try in what Nilpeter refers to as The Age of Automation . The company has made massive financial investments in its op- erations recently, resulting in a lights out facility with two fully automated machining centers.

The full program included three (Cont’d on Page 9) do, Florida. The show was held at the Kentucky International Convention Center.

“That allows us to do less with more,” said Paul Teachout,Vice President of Sales & Marketing for Nilpeter. The all-new FA, FB-350, and Panorama presses were demon- strated at the Open House. The FA press is, according to Nilpeter, designed for the modern, intuitive press operator. This approach eliminates previous manual controls; quick lock handles are replaced with touch screen con- trols, all printing unit covers can open individually or simultaneously Paul Teachout, Vice President of Sales & Marketing for Nilpeter, explains the company’s clean hand technology at the Open House.

Nilpeter feels the increased technological advance- ments included in its presses will attract young, for- ward-thinking people to the converting industry, peo- ple who grew up with disruptive technology. “It will ultimately lead more young people to pur- sue the converting industry as a career,” Teachout told Flexo Market News last year before the FA press made its North American debut at Labelexpo Americas.“The age-old image of a printing press operator wearing an apron, covered in ink are still prevalent. DuPont Scientists Named 2019 Heroes of Chemistry DuPont Advanced Printing announced that five of its scientists were recognized with the prestigious Amer- ican Chemical Society’s (ACS) Heroes of Chemistry Award for their discovery and development of DuPont Cyrel EASY. The DuPont scientists are Adrian Lungu, Robert Blomquist,Mark Hackler,Violeta Lungu and Raj Subramanian. Heroes of Chemistry is an annual award sponsored by the American Chemical Society that recognizes the role industrial chemical scientists and companies play in improving human welfare through commercial in- novations and products. The 2019 Heroes of Chemistry awards ceremony will take place Sunday,August 25, in San Diego. DuPont Introduces Cyrel DLC Plate For Corrugated Printing DuPont Advanced Printing has announced the com- mercial availability of the newest addition to the award-winning DuPont Cyrel plate platform, the Du- Pont Cyrel DLC. Cyrel DLC is a soft digital plate that uses a new polymer formulation developed especially for the corrugated market. Its low durometer is reportedly designed for better printing on lower quality recy- cled and thinner liner corrugated board using wa- ter-based inks. Delivering the ink from the plate to the substrate in a way that provides excellent solid ink coverage, while not crushing the board with over-impression, has been a challenge, but is now achievable with the Cyrel DLC plate, according to the company. Edge crush test (ECT values) are reportedly kept virtually unchanged after printing. The Phoenix Challenge College Competition will be held May 4 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana; leading into the FTA Annual Forum held May 5-8 in New Orleans. The competition brings 50-60 students from col- leges across NorthAmerica and continues to drive the mission of the Phoenix Challenge Foundation: to pro- vide access, support, competition and scholarship for students who are pursuing education and careers in flexography and graphic arts. ICPF Launches Packaging Curricula At NC State North Carolina State University (NC State) is adding a new dimension to its Department of Forest Biomateri- als. Through the assistance of ICPF’s corrugated pack- aging awards program, the university is launching its first corrugated packaging and design curricula track. The new program, which will receive ICPF equipment donations and funding over a three-year period as NC State delivers measurable steps, will expand student capabilities and interest beyond the mill into plant production & operations management, design, sales and ultimately mid-level and upper-level executive management. As the first part of the partnership between ICPF and NC State, ICPF is installing a CAD table and Impact de- sign software in NC State’s new corrugated packaging lab this semester. With more than 180 students annually enrolled in the university’s Paper Science & Engineering program, NC State is working to become a major recruitment re- source for ICPF Corporate Partners in the mid-Atlantic, southern and other regions of the United States. Studentswill begin taking mandatory corrugated packaging & design curricula this spring & fall.

options to the digital hybrid marketplace. Nilpeter’s Panorama press allows printers to utilize a standalone inkjet unit or run it in-line as pat of a hybrid press with FA technology. “The alliance that we have with Screen now ties our sales force, our technical force, our inventories, our consumables and our support,” said Teachout. Dan Muenzer, President of TLMI, provided an over- view of the label industry for Open House attendees. Muenzer described a $13.5 billion industry that con- tinues to expand. “At the end of the day, this little cottage industry of label printers is growing up and making money,”added Muenzer. Using member-provided date, TLMI estimated that the industry saw 6 percent growth last year. TLMI’s median size printer is valued at $11 million. Many businesses, now in their second and third gen- eration of ownership, will be looking at new ways to generate revenue streams. This is where new technol- ogy will continue to help converters. “[The label industry is] getting a lot of interest from outside the industry, be it from flexible packaging or from private equity firms,” said Muenzer.

W&H Hosts Future Of Flexo Open House At the end of March, machine manufacturer Wind- möller & Hölscher hosted visitors to the open house “Experience the Future of Flexo”. More than 500 visi- tors from around the globe attended demonstrations. The Open House featured the premiere of the NOVO- FLEX II high-performance flexographic printing press, which is said to be able to print the most challeng- ing jobs at maximum speeds.W&H demonstrated the performance of the new system by switching between two images at a speed of 600 meters per minute. The MIRAFLEX from W&H is the market’s best-sell- ing press with more than 650 machines worldwide. At the Open House, W&H showed the MIRAFLEX II in two versions:The dual-port and a new compact sin- gle-port that requires less floor space. W&H also used the demonstration of the two MIRAF- LEX II versions for a direct comparison of CMYK color separation with multicolor separation. While the single port printed in 4 color, the dual port worked with a fixed 7C color palette. The Information and Diagnostics Center (IDC) demon- strated the use of digital data glasses during live trouble- shooting:A customer who needs technical support puts on the headset with integrated camera and connects to an expert from the IDC.The expert sees everything the customer sees in real time and can help him quickly and easily. In the medium term, the digital services will be used in both service support and training.
