tant told a crowd of 5,000 that “if the Catholic Church stayed within the Scriptures, it could not teach the things it does.” In response, the Catholic re torted that the Bible “ is not the last court of appeal and that the Scriptures came from the church, not the church from the Bible.” It was emphasized that the debate was being conducted on a very high plane with no squabbling or mud-sling ing, with the audience behaving won derfully and with no demonstrations. We believe, however, it is safe to pre dict that officially the Roman Catholic Church will want nothing of this kind. The truth is too conclusive when brought to the surface and would react very unfavorably against Roman Cath olic dogma. The Catholic Church does, and always has thrived upon ignorance and superstition. Nor are its principles any different today. Race Trouble Increases & According to a joint report by the National Association for Advancement of Colored People and the American Jewish Congress, civil rights in the United States did not make any out standing advances in 1951. On the other hand, violence designed to maintain ex isting inequality has increased steadily and our governments have shown either unwillingness or inability to cope with it. In a foreword to the report, a warn ing was made that continued discrimi nation in the United States is seriously weakening our moral and political rela tionship in world affairs. While we are sympathetic with the desires of these minority groups, we must point out that such amiable, peace able relations can never be expected until our Lord returns, when with a rod of iron He will enforce righteousness throughout the world. Pastor Refuses Taxes Jt A woman pastor in Washington County, New York State, has paid only 25% of her 1951 Federal Income Tax because she is opposed to the govern ment’s war-like ventures. She claims that she is a Christian pacifist and can not support war in any way. Last year the same thing happened with the result that the Collector of Internal Revenue placed a lien against her salary and in dicated that the same method would be used this year to collect the unpaid taxes. Evidently this so-called pastor has failed to both read and understand the first six verses of Romans 13 where the Christian is admonished to pay that which is due to his government. On the other side of the ledger, due to a radio sermon by Billy Graham, a total of $765.00 in cash arrived in three letters to be delivered to the Collector of Internal Revenue and described as restitution for shortages in past Income Tax Reports.

Testament, went to be with the Lord recently from his home in Lakeland, Florida. The 80-year old translator spent almost 20 years in completing his translation of the New Testament from the original Greek into modern English. This translation is one of the finest of the modern versions and is particularly valuable as it attempts to translate clearly the force of the Greek tense. Bob Pierce Meetings An American team composed of Dr. Bob Pierce, Don DeVos and Herman Voss report a most remarkable series of evangelistic meetings in several cities in England despite the ultra conserva tism of the people. This American team has effectively united the co-operating churches into a real force for God in the community. Seeds for a wide-spread revival are apparently being sown. It will also be remembered that the Bible, which is another of God’s crea tions, is beautifully interwoven with a numerical pattern into which the num ber seven figures largely. Shaw's Bible An editorial in the Dallas Morning News states that George Bernard Shaw once owned a Bible. Four years before he died he sold it to auctioneers. A few days ago, the auctioneer sold the same Bible for $50.00. One of the selling points seems to have been an inscription on the flyleaf by the playright himself: “ Except as a curiosity, this book as a material object is a most undesirable possession . . . I must get rid of it. I really cannot bear it in my house.” In contrast to that, the poet John Greenleaf Whittier wrote: “We search the world for truth; we cull The good, the pure, the beautiful, From graven stone and written scroll, From all old flower-fields of the soul; And weary seekers of the best, We come back laden from our quest, To find that all the sages said Is in the Book our mothers read.” Commenting on these two quotations, Tom Olson cites John 12:48: “ He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.” Catholic-Protestant Debate Jt In a news item from Stillwater, Okla., we learn that this small town was crowded recently with visitors from fourteen states who came to hear a de bate between a Catholic priest and a Protestant minister. The debate cen tered on the Bible and the merits of their respective churches. The Protes The Bible In The News ( Continued from Page 20)

More Day Schools At least 50 more Christian Day Schools will be formed as plans of the National Union of Christian Schools mature. This organization is the lead ing one of its kind in America and has 156 schools in 24 states and 3 provinces of Canada. Schools in this group are controlled by associations of parents committed to Calvinist creeds. Best Sellers The organization given over to the posting of Bible texts in street cars, busses and billboards is known as “ Best Seller Publicity.” Not only are these Bible texts displayed in America but 6,000 posters have just been sent to India and 2,000 to Pakistan, with large quantities for many of the larger In dian cities. In addition, Best Seller has invaded the radio-TV field with several stations reading a favorite Bible verse as a part of their daily program. Portable Church Services Church services in rural and out-of- the-way communities by means of tape recordings are now operating in 14 states as well as one in the United States Navy and one in a large Alaskan hospital. Communities desiring this service, which is headed by Dr. Donald Grey Barnhouse of Philadelphia, may obtain the recordings of complete serv ices at a very nominal fee. The services themselves consist of excellent music, Bible reading and a sermon, all done in a very acceptable manner. Spanish Priests Accept A news item from the Spanish Chris tian Mission reports some progress in gospel preaching in Spain. Recently Dr. Carrillo de Albornoz, General Secretary of the Marian congregations all over the world, passed into the ranks of evangelical Christians. A French pastor who recently visited with him reported that this brother is full of joy for hav ing had the courage to confess Christ publicly. He has lost honors, position and wealth, but feels that he has far more in having the Lord’s approval. New Graham Film Another Billy Graham religious film is now in the process of being made. The story will center around a hard bitten oil man who is brought to Christ through the conversion of his daughter, played by Colleen Townsend Evans. The name of the film is to be “ Oil Town.” Dr. Williams Dies Dr. Charles B. Williams, author, teacher and translator of Williams’ New
