ers are willing to do most anything for a needy people but to pray for them. In many instances prayer appears to be an impractical thing. Not so with Samuel. So Israel gathered at Mizpeh (v. 6). Mizpeh means “ outlook” or “watch- tower.” The name suggests an experi ence of looking to God, of introspec tion, of getting above the sordid things of this world. While gathered at Mizpeh they “ drew water, and poured it out before the Lord.” This seems to have been a sym bolical act by which the people showed their sincere desire to pour out their hearts in repentance and confession to God. The fasting showed their desire to get right with God. They were so con cerned about that they did not think about eating. That kind of fasting is really beneficial. In such an attitude they confessed their sin and Samuel ministered unto them. When God’s people seek to get closer to Him, the adversary always seeks to put hindrances in the way. So on this occasion the Philistines brought fear into the hearts of Israel (v. 7). How ever, instead of diverting their atten tion from God, this difficulty drove them to God (v. 8). They seemed to be con vinced that Samuel’s prayers would save them from the Philistines.

1 Sam. 7:5-17 Pointers on the Lesson

Last week we considered the birth of Samuel in answer to a mother’s prayer. Furthermore, we studied the dedication of Samuel to the Lord at a very tender age and his subsequent call to the serv ice of the Lord. He responded readily to this call and in today’s lesson we find Samuel busily engaged in fulfilling God’s purpose for his life. It was a time of desperate need in the life of Israel. The ark of God had not yet come to its final resting place. It had been in the hands of the pagan Philistines but now was in Kirjath-jearim in the home of a man by the name of Abinadab. But not yet was it in Jerusalem, the place God had planned for it. Then, too, the Phil istines were ready most any time to do violence to Israel. It was at such a time that Samuel asserted his leadership and called God’s people to repentance (w . 3,4). Samuel’s Leadership in a Great Day of Prayer vv. 5-9 After Israel had given evidence of desiring a closer walk with God, Sam uel called for a solemn gathering that he might pray for them (v. 5). It is always good when a people has someone to pray for them. Too often well-wish
