his thousands, and David his ten thou sands. And Saul was very wroth, and the saying displeased him; and he said, They have ascribed unto David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed but thousands: and what can he have more but the kingdom?” (1 Sam. 18:7, 8). Prom then on Saul tried to kill David. This should be a warning to people to day, showing them that they should let their lights shine before men and glorify God, instead of letting their lives be spoiled by sin. Objects: A large magnet, a tin heart, a rubber heart cut from an automobile tire tube, and several nails of different sizes. (Tie the rubber heart on one prong of the magnet. The tin heart will stick to the other.) Lesson: This is a strange-looking magnet, isn’t it? Its two hearts repre sent two kinds of people. Most people are very selfish. Notice how this bright tin heart grabs everything it can. (Hold it near the nails.) The other heart is entirely different. It has the drawing power of the magnet back of it, but does not use the strength of the magnet to take that which does not belong to it. The nails are not grabbed by this heart. As I look at it, I am reminded of David. He had been anointed king of Israel, but he would not take the king dom until God was ready for him to have it. David could have killed Saul, and the kingdom would have been his, hut he would not allow himself to be controlled by selfishness. This is one of the great differences between Saul and David. Saul on many occasions tried to kill David. When David had an opportunity to kill Saul, he was not selfish enough to do it. He would never have been called a man after God’s own heart (1 Sam. 13:14) if he had been selfish like Saul. The person who is unselfish and who waits for God’s time for. special bless ings, will never be disappointed. August 24, 1952 D avid and D uty

Objects: A purple crayon and a one- inch bolt about eight inches long. (Have a machinist drill a hole through the head of the bolt, down the stem, wide enough and deep enough to conceal the crayon.) Lesson: I have chosen a purple crayon, because purple is a royal color and has often in the past been asso ciated with kings. I want this crayon to remind us of David, Israel’s king. Crayons are not strong, and if not handled very carefully, they break. The smallest child here could easily break this crayon. I have a large bright bolt, which wijl remind us of God and His power. This crayon, which is very easily

broken, if placed close to the bolt, would be much less apt to get broken. If it were possible to put the crayon on the inside of the bolt, it would be next to impossible for any of you to break it. Watch and see what happens when I put the crayon on the inside of the bolt. (Insert it in the hole, allowing it to disappear.) Now, who would be foolish enough to try to break the crayon? The Lord gave wonderful protection to David, because David trusted in Him. In Second Samuel 5:10, 12, we read, “ And David went on, and grew great, and the Lord God of hosts was with him. And David perceived that the Lord had established him king over Israel, and that he had exalted his kingdom for his people Israel’s sake.” Not only was David blessed, but Israel as well. “ And David reigned over all Israel; and David executed judgment and justice unto all his people” (2 Sam. 8:15). This crayon in the bolt reminds me of Ephesians 6:10, “ Finally, my breth ren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.” A Good Place For Your Tithe Our Free Fund is very low. David received the throne when God was ready for him to have it. To receive it from God was far better than to try to get it by selfish means. In Second Samuel 5:3 we read, “ So all the elders of Israel came to the king to Hebron; and king David made a league with them in Hebron before the Lord: and they anointed David king over Israel.”
