Clarence-Rockland council may have a budget surplus to look forward to once the final financial review of last year’s city operations is done. City administration presented council during a recent session with a preliminary report on results of the 2020 municipal bud- get expenses. The report indicates the city may have a surplus of $741,806 resulting from lower costs than anticipated for last year’s operations and other factors. But the report cautioned that the final analysis is not finished. “However, it is important to know that although the end of the year is completed,” the report stated, “there are still year-end adjustments to be made which could still cause the (final) results to vary.” The report also noted that 2020 “was an extraordinary year” with the pandemic affec- ting municipal operations all over the country, including town hall closures, staff working at home, closure of arenas and many other public recreation facilities, cancellation of some projects because of pandemic health safety guidelines, and other effects. Some or all of these factors resulted in savings for some departments because of lower maintenance costs than originally projected, savings in the price of some materials due to the pandemic, or savings on electricity and other expenses.
Also, the report noted, municipalities received extra support funding from the provincial and federal governments to help deal with some of their own expenses related to the pandemic.
