Are You Experiencing Sciatic Pain?

We Treat the Cause, Not Just the Symptoms

M illions of Americans are adversely affected by back pain each year. While there are a lot of treatment options available, many of these only address symptoms and don’t target the actual cause of the pain. Not a medical diagnosis in and of itself, sciatica is a symptom of an underlying condition, such as degenerative disc disease, a lumbar herniated disc, spondylolisthesis, or spinal stenosis. This condition occurs when a nerve in your lower back is injured, pinched, or compressed, which causes pain that can extend from the lower back to the hip, leg, and foot. Thankfully, sciatica responds well to physical therapy. Sciatica is characterized by the following: constant pain in only one buttock; pain that is worse when sitting; leg pain in the form of burning, tingling, or searing; weakness, numbness, or difficulty moving the leg; a sharp pain that makes it difficult to stand up; or pain that radiates down the leg.

If the muscles supporting your spinal column — abdominal, gluteal, and hip — are weak, inflexible, or tight, they can be a contributing factor in your sciatica. Stretching and strengthening these muscles will often provide relief from sciatic pain. Your physical therapist will also create an at-home program to enhance your recovery. It is important to keep up with your exercises to treat sciatica and prevent it from resurfacing. Eventually, you will be able to return to the normal activities you love.
