THE BEST ROLE MODELS IN THE WORLD

A Tribute to Adrienne and My Mom

T his month, we celebrate Mother’s Day on May 13. My mom was always an excellent role model, and she had a profound influence on my life. I credit her love and belief in my abilities for getting me to where I am today. Neither of my parents attended college, so my mom stressed to my sister and me how important it was for us to get a higher education. She always encouraged me to do well in school, and she did everything in her power to help me succeed. However, that doesn’t mean she did my homework for me. Instead, she was always checking up on me to make sure I was on top of my schoolwork and that I was making good grades. She was always supportive of my passions in and outside of school. My mom always encouraged us to do our best, maintain a positive mental outlook, and reach our full potential. I have always been grateful for everything she’s ever done for me. When I was in high school, my mom worked for the school I attended. She knew the administrators and all the teachers, so if I had decided I wanted to slack off in school (I didn’t!), she would’ve been right there to kick my butt back into shape. I don’t think she took the job so that she could keep an eye on my sister and me. It was more that she wanted to make sure she was constantly at our disposal. It was honestly nice to have her there if I needed her. My mom lives about 20 minutes away from us, and she’s a huge part of my kids’ lives. Occasionally, my mom will treat the kids with a

for days afterward. My daughter loves her dates with Grandma; they get along so well.

Having had such a great mom, it’s easy to see what a wonderful mom Adrienne is to our children. She’s a schoolteacher by day and Superwoman by night. She works so hard at school, and she comes home filled with happiness and positivity, ready to do whatever needs to be done. She wears all the hats, and she is the epitome of what it means to be a mom. I am constantly in awe of all that she does. I have no doubt that our children will blossom into wonderful human beings because of all that she does. I am truly grateful for all that my mom has done for our family. And I am so lucky to call Adrienne my wife and the mother of my children. Mom, Adrienne, I love you both so very much. Happy Mother’s Day!

MY MOM ALWAYS ENCOURAGED US TO

STRIVE FOR OUR BEST, MAINTAIN A POSITIVE MENTAL OUTLOOK, AND REACH OUR FULL POTENTIAL.

I hope you have a great Mother’s Day. We look forward to seeing you soon.

Are You Experiencing Sciatic Pain?

We Treat the Cause, Not Just the Symptoms

M illions of Americans are adversely affected by back pain each year. While there are a lot of treatment options available, many of these only address symptoms and don’t target the actual cause of the pain. Not a medical diagnosis in and of itself, sciatica is a symptom of an underlying condition, such as degenerative disc disease, a lumbar herniated disc, spondylolisthesis, or spinal stenosis. This condition occurs when a nerve in your lower back is injured, pinched, or compressed, which causes pain that can extend from the lower back to the hip, leg, and foot. Thankfully, sciatica responds well to physical therapy. Sciatica is characterized by the following: constant pain in only one buttock; pain that is worse when sitting; leg pain in the form of burning, tingling, or searing; weakness, numbness, or difficulty moving the leg; a sharp pain that makes it difficult to stand up; or pain that radiates down the leg.

particularly helpful for individuals with sciatica. For example, your physical therapist may recommend water exercises to stay physically active. They will also prescribe exercises to reduce pain and improve motion, flexibility, strength, endurance, and posture. Many times, it’s not just the lower back that needs an adjustment. If the muscles supporting your spinal column — abdominal, gluteal, and hip — are weak, inflexible, or tight, they can be a contributing factor in your sciatica. Stretching and strengthening these muscles will often provide relief from sciatic pain. Your physical therapist will also create an at-home program to enhance your recovery. It is important to keep up with your exercises to treat sciatica and prevent it from resurfacing. Eventually, you will be able to return to the normal activities you love. If you are experiencing sciatic pain, call Gilbert Physical Therapy today at 717-591-0955. We will find the root cause of your problem and put you on the path to recovery.

After evaluation, your physical therapist will work with you to create a unique treatment plan to ensure your recovery. Some exercises are

The Key to a Memorable Vacation

Buy Local When You’re Abroad Enrich Your Vacation

Art Just as your town probably has local artisans who produce unique and interesting work, the same is true for your vacation destination. Anyone can get a gift shop bauble that was mass-produced somewhere else. Take the time to peruse market stalls and craft fairs while you travel. It can lead you to some truly special souvenirs, and you’ll support the arts and traditions of the region! People While you’re out sampling local restaurants and exploring local markets, you’ll meet plenty of local people. Don’t be afraid to strike up a friendly conversation. You can make new friends around the globe and learn about their unique experiences. One of the most enriching experiences in life is meeting new people and gaining new perspectives. Memories Treasured memories are the best souvenir you can bring home from any vacation. So you owe it to yourself to get out and explore!

The virtues of buying locally sourced food and supporting small businesses have been widely extolled. But we rarely think to apply the same practices when we travel. Many Americans spring for all-inclusive packages when planning their next summer vacation, but doing so means they’ll miss out on some of the best aspects of the culture they’re visiting. Part of the joy of traveling is having new experiences you can’t have at home. Whether you’re in another state or another country, you owe it to yourself to seek out the unique aspects of that location. But to find the character and quirks of your destination, you’ll have to explore beyond the hotel lobby. Food Why have a cheeseburger from a fast-food chain when you can try a local favorite? A great way to start is by asking your taxi driver or hotel concierge about their favorite place to eat. You’ll discover new foods and flavor combinations, and the locally owned restaurant is sure to appreciate your business!
