T HE K I N G ' S B U S I N E S S and see on which side blame lies. This elderly man makes a repo rt a t the ex piration of th e appointed tim e; and this rep o rt is the foundation on which the cadi builds his judgm en t of divorce. Experience has dem onstrated th a t there is no b etter method of restoring peace in families. The husband and wife, p u t thu s upon th e ir good be havior, resume the m anners of court ing days. Each strives to be more am iable than the other, to convince the “ elder of Isra el” th a t it is no t th is one’s fau lt if the honey-moon changed its quarter. gfe ate A FIRM PLATFORM “ I have always found in my scientific studies th a t when I could get th e Bible to say anything upon th e subject, it afforded me a firm platform to stand upon, and a round in the ladder by which I could safely ascend.”—--Commodore Manury. 940 have dawned on th is creato r of fiction th a t th ere is a wide gulf between sp irit and flesh. One cannot help, b u t smile when he makes a ouija board th e arbi te r of our faith in immortality. We are no t objecting to th is producer of en tertaining romance having his no tions. He may have all of them he wishes, and any kind he wishes; bu t we do object to his effort to sub stitu te his “ autom atic w riting s’’ and his ouija boards for th e Christian faith. We claim a far b etter foundation for our faith in imm ortality th an all the w ritings he has ever seen or all th e didos th a t a ouija board can be guilty of. We m ight call th is celebrity’s a tte n tion to the fact th a t Jesus knew noth ing of mediums of any kind coming be tween Himself and the angels th a t m in istered to Him. I t m ight be well for him to note th a t th e re was a directness between the shepherds and th e m ulti tude of th e heavenly host th a t leaves no room for his mediums or' ouijas. A m ind of h is in tellectu al caliber ought to know th a t sp iritual v erities are not subject to th e same rules as m atter. There is such a th ing as grown- upness in th e ’'th in g s of th e Spirit and sp iritual life. There is more juvenile ta lk about sp iritu al things by men who make a pastim e of its study th an about almost any other subject one m ight name. To make a ouija board th e me dium between two souls for th e deter m ination of as serious a question as the continued life afte r death is an act too silly and absurd to a ttrib u te even to a child. Only a man who has forgotten how to become a child could be guilty of such nonsense.-tr-F. B. Stockdale. WOULDN’T TH IS WORK? When m arried people seek a separa tion among th e Arabs, th e cadi orders them to live for some tim e w ith a dis creet and au stere man of th e tribe, th a t the la tte r may examine th e ir life.
