IF YOUR COMPANY HAD A VOICE, WHAT WOULD IT SAY TO YOU?

than me, even though I was better at the job. When I asked for a raise, he only agreed to give me a quarter. It drove me nuts! The thing is I don’t want my kids to struggle. I did enough struggling myself so things could be easier for them! But I know that it’s through struggle and hardships, when it’s sink or swim, that we become prepared for life’s challenges. When Jake first started working at the company, I had him outside doing yardwork for two years. He hated it, but he stuck with it. Now he’s in the marketing business, which he’s great at! Jake has studied so much Russel Brunson stuff that he could move to Idaho and work for ClickFunnels. (Don’t tell him I said that.) My son has had to struggle a lot in this business, and I’ve seen him grow so much because of it. I’m sure one day the company will tell me it’s time for Jake to run the show, if that’s something my son wants to do. I just hope I’ll be smart enough to listen.

I knew this is what the company would say, and I could see where things would end if we stayed on that old course. Giving the company a voice allowed me to take action. I was able to move past my fear of upsetting my parents and make the hard choice. One day, I walked into my dad’s office and gave him three options. Either I would buy his share of the company, he would buy mine, or I would quit and start a new business in some other field. Dad was furious at me because he knew I’d backed him into a corner. Up to that point, I had started doing more and more for the company. I was a better business manager, and I was able to grow the business faster than he could. Though he was working progressively less, Dad was terrified to let go. Ultimately, my parents took the deal and let me take over. They were pretty upset at first, but over time, they came to realize it was the best decision. Our relationship now is better than ever. ‘Don’t Make It Easy’ Today I’m on the other side of the fence. I’m running the business, and my son Jake works for me. I want Jake to run the business one day, but when I listen to what the company says, I hear, “He needs to take over the business.” I can’t just give it to him. The day has to come when he’s willing to fight for it and when he’s confident enough to know he can. This means he needs to struggle.

There’s a piece of advice I give to other business owners a lot when they’re struggling with a decision they need to make: “If your company had a voice, what would it say to you?” In other words, “What’s the best move for your company?” Running a business isn’t easy, and sometimes personal feelings can cloud your judgment. It’s tempting to put off making big decisions when we’re uncertain of the outcome. Uncertainty leads to doubt and those racing thoughts asking, “Am I really doing the right thing?”When someone reaches that point, I tell them to listen to their company. Sometimes you won’t like what your company is saying. It can be a hard truth like, “Fire your brother,” or “Change your entire business plan.” Or, in my case, “Fire your parents.” ‘You Need to Fire Your Parents’ Taking the company from my parents was not easy. We had reached a point where my dad was set in his ways, and I wasn’t able to introduce the ideas I had that would help the company grow. It was frustrating on so many levels. I saw my relationship with my parents start to erode, but I didn’t want to hurt their feelings. That’s when I thought, “Okay, what would the company tell me to do?” “We’re not growing the way we need to grow. We need to make investments, not spend all the profits. If we don’t adapt with the times, we’re going to die.”

This past summer, 100,000 employees from businesses across Canada and the northeastern United States were informed they were being sued. They received this troubling news over email and were warned that they had seven days to reply before the lawsuit would move forward. The exact nature of the lawsuit wasn’t clear until the employees downloaded the encrypted document attached to the email. Unfortunately, what was hidden inside the document proved to be almost worse than an unexpected lawsuit: It was a Trojan program that installed malware on their computers. None of these employees were actually facing lawsuits, at least, not from the law offices the email claimed to be from. These emails were part of a phishing scheme, one that utilizes fear to make people act without thinking and accidentally download a malicious program. Legal threats are a popular tactic among phishing schemes today. There’s nothing like the threat of a lawsuit to make someone open an email from an unfamiliar source. While this scheme used malware, Trojans are also used to install ransomware, locking users out of their systems and forcing them to pay a ransom in order to get their data back. Phishers don’t need everyone to fall for their tricks; just a tiny percentage of employees need to open the email and download the malware in order for the scammers to enjoy a good payday. It’s not hard to understand why someone would fall for a phishing scheme like this — no one wants to get sued. This latest scheme is a good reminder that you should be wary of any email you weren’t expecting. Phishers can use fake legal threats, spoof a CEO’s email, and even mimic a warning from your bank. Every email should be regarded with extreme suspicion. If an email seems even remotely suspicious, send it to the trash. Never download any attachments or reply to these emails. If you’re worried that an email might be legitimate, do the leg work and reach out to the sender over the phone to verify before opening the email. Make sure your team is trained on this same protocol. A couple extra minutes to make a phone call can save you from a costly mess. Phishing Schemes’ Secret Weapon: Legal Threats

Which Training Is Better for Your Abs? Planks vs. Crunches

• Planks: A static hold that targets the rectus abdominis, obliques, erector spinae, glutes, hip flexors, quads, and deltoids. • Crunches: A dynamic move that engages the rectus abdominis and the obliques, providing isolated conditioning. As stated above, both crunches and planks are valuable assets in core training, but research from the Les Mills fitness program found that when you compare the moves, planks offer greater muscle activation. This means if you want to see the best results for sports performance, rehab, or overall fitness, planks are your best friend . The exercise is simple, which also means that you can do planks anywhere, including in your office after lunch or while binge-watching Netflix on the weekends. This doesn’t mean you should stop doing crunches or that crunches can’t help anymore. If you have weak wrists or shoulders, crunches are a good alternative to planks. However, if you have to choose one and you’re looking for the best method to increase balance, stability, and strength, you can’t go wrong with planks.

When it comes to fitness routines, core workouts are highly dreaded and often valued for all the wrong reasons. Visions of a superhero six-pack might inspire you to start doing crunches, but it’s not long before the effort and burn might persuade you to just wear a T-shirt to the beach instead. Core training shouldn’t be done just to get screen-ready abs — which, let’s be honest, even the actors in movies don’t really have. Core exercises help your pelvis, lower back, hips, and abdomen get stronger and work together, leading to better balance and stability. These aren’t areas most people even think about, but without balance and stability, even walking becomes a challenge. It’s easy to overlook the importance of balance until you don’t have it anymore. This is why it’s crucial to start your core training now, and not after you’ve taken your first fall at age 70.

What’s the most effective ab workout?

When it’s time to work on that core strength, you have two options: planks or crunches. These are the most popular core training moves, and while both are beneficial, they don’t produce the same results.

gratitude verbally more often. I’m great at showing my appreciation with actions but don’t do as well with words. I know I’m fortunate and lucky to have the team we have here, and I’m excited about our future together. I’m the luckiest business owner in the world; I’m certain about that. Not because of any monetary gains but because of the relationships I’ve benefited from, with both employees and customers. I believe the business would thank me for the deal I made with my parents years ago and for grooming Jake to secure the future, if he decides to do that. The thing about giving your company a voice is that it’s not all hard choices and criticisms. Sometimes your company will let you know when you’re doing a good job too. –Randy Sklar

How to Match Your Routine to Your Plate Finding the Right Workout for Your Diet

burn more fat during cardio because you won’t have a store of glycogen to compete with it as an energy source.

What you eat and how your body performs are two intimately linked aspects of your overall fitness. That’s why distance runners carb-load on spaghetti before marathons and yogis skip breakfast before a 105-degree Bikram class. However, this nuance is easy to neglect in a world of fad diets and food trends that move at whiplash speed. If you’ve jumped on the keto, vegan, or paleo bandwagons but are still slogging through the same workout routine, it’s time to take a closer look at your body’s needs and tailor your gym time accordingly. Here are a few tips for matching your diet to the optimal workout. Keto This high-fat, low-carb diet is currently booming among athletes who relish the opportunity to chow down on pork rinds and cheese (a perk that comes at the expense of giving up chips, bread, and most fruits). Shape magazine recommends moderate-intensity workouts for people eating keto because they won’t have the ample supply of glucose the body relies on for high- intensity exercises like sprints and HIIT. On the plus side, if you go keto, you’ll

Vegan Plant-based diets are generally associated with slow-moving exercises like yoga, but VegNews reports that short, high-intensity workouts are actually the best option for people who don’t eat meat or dairy. Choosing quick workouts means your body won’t use up as much protein (which vegans generally consume less of), and the ample glucose in a vegan diet is ideal for powering intense workouts like sprints, stairs, body-weight lifts, and CrossFit drills. Paleo The paleo diet is unique in that it actually comes with its own exercise plan, though many paleo eaters probably don’t know it. According to Paleo Leap, “The paleo lifestyle emphasizes natural movement (preferably outside) over machine-based exercises and brief but intense strength training workouts over extended sessions of steady-state cardio.” Above all, paleo advocates advise listening to your body and choosing a workout plan that leaves you feeling good.
