TRACK STARS FROM RUSSELL HIGH SCHOOLS WIN AT EOSSAA GREGG CHAMBERLAIN gregg.chamberlain@eap.on.ca
Jacob Hill set new school records in the midget boys 3000-metre and 1500-metre with his second- and fourth-place finishes at EOSSAA. Cassidy Porteous finished fifth in the midget girls 300-metre hurdles and set a new personal best. Abby Sinden finished in the top 10 in senior girls high jump. Saint Thomas Aquinas Saint Thomas Aquinas Catholic High School had a large team this season for EOSSAA, with strong finishes in several categories. Athletes in the top five of their events qualify for the Eastern Regional. Final results for the STA Ravens track team include: Keely Zandbelt, 1st, junior girls shotput; Brittney Verch, tied for 3rd, junior girls high jump; Monette Erin, 11th, midget girls 400-metre; Abby Carson, 13th, midget girls long jump; Rebecca Greer, 5th, midget girls 3000-metre, 6th, midget girls 800-metre; Katarina Tessier, 16th, midget girls long jump; Mackenzie Fiset, 15th, mid- get boys 1500-metre; Tristan Babin, 5th, midget boys high jump, 13th long jump; Noah Tessier, 14th, midget boys javelin; Noah Levesque, 15th, midget boys javelin; Eric Devries, 8th, junior boys high jump; Jaiden Longval, 14th, junior boys shot put, and 20th javelin; Peter McCannell, 19th, senior boys 1500-metre; STA relay teams midget boys 8th, 4x100-metre.
There was a good lineup from the two high schools in the Village of Russell for the OFSSA-Eastern Regional track and field championships in Belleville. All but one of the members of the Timbe- rwolves track team from Russell High School finished in the top five of their event at the Eastern Ontario Secondary School Athle- tic Associations (EOSSAA) track and field championships in Brockville, on May 23 and 24. That earned them spots in the Ontario Federation of Secondary School Athletic Associations-Eastern Regional championship in Belleville at the end of May. “Russell High School had a great day at EOSSAA,” said coach Gord Zubnyk. “Almost everyone moved on.” Teagan Williams set a new school record with his first-place EOSSAA result in the mid- get boys 200-metre sprint. He also finished first in the 100-metre sprint. Daniel Kreft leaped into first place in junior boys 100-metre hurdles, and landed second place in the 300-metre hurdles. Both events included personal best times for Kreft. Owen Johnson also set a new personal best time with his third-place finish in midget boys 300-metre hurdles and fourth in the 100-metre hurdles. Les athlètes de Casselman et d’Embrun ont terminé dans les premiers rangs aux championnats d’athlétisme de l’est de l’Ontario. L’École secondaire catholique d’Embrun (ESCE) et l’École secondaire catholique de Casselman (ESCC) ont toutes deux envoyé de fortes équipes aux Championnats d’ath- létisme de l’Eastern Ontario Secondardy School Athletic Associations (EOSSAA), à Brockville, les 23 et 24 mai. Tous les athlètes ayant obtenu les cinq meilleurs résultats se qualifient pour le championnat régional OFSSA-Eastern Regional à Belleville.
