in fifteen or twenty miles of it, bones lie scattered all around of men and their horses that might have reached it had it been possible to know, on that featureless plain, where to find it. . . . At the very gateway of the enclosure a prospector was found one morning, lost and dead. Finally an owner erected a lighthouse. He planted a tall cottonwood pole and strung a lantern upon it, and that has been kept lighted always. Are you and I doing worse—leav ing our fellows in a more dreadful danger —neglecting to hold out to them the Light of salvation?— The Dawn. “And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for. us an offering ahd a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savor” (Eph. 5:2). O Christian, do you really long to know the love of Christ in all its fullness? Then yield yourself wholly to Him and His blessed service. Regard yourself as a chan nel through which the Highest Love can attain its aim. Take the souls around you into a sympathizing, loving heart, and be gin to suffer with them and intercede for them. Let it be your chief delight to live and to suffer for others, in the love and fellowship of the Lord Jesus. — A ndrew M urray . The power lines of divine provision are all around you. Power is even now flow ing into your life' if only you will use it. When Bombay, India, authorities conceived the idea of forming a chain of dams to catch the natural water supply from the clouds to set in motion their electric power stations, they laid hold of sufficient water in one season to keep the Bombay mills in action for three years. Before this there was no adjustment to the natural supply at their disposal. It only waits for you to link yourself by faith to the purpose of God, that your life may be changed and your weakness transformed into power.—From The Conquest of Life by W . Mallis.* “ Without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must be lieve that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him” (Heb. 11:6). Are you willing to die to your own strength; to forsake your own plans for- God’s; to seek out and do His will abso lutely; to take up the attitude of entire and absolute surrender to His purposes; to feed daily on the promises of God; to step out in faith, reckoning, without emotion of any kind, on the faithfulness of God, only fully persuaded that He will perform all that He has promised? —F. SEPTEMBER 24 Alone

“ Who in the days of his flesh, ’when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared" (Heb. 5:7). This time the weeping One was alone. . . . There is so much more in those awe inspiring tears than human pen can write of or human thought fathom; let them be. Only, this they tell us, that in the hour of our deepest anguish, when we entreat in vain that some bitter cup may be taken" from us, there is One who has prayed the same prayer, yet had tp drink the cup to the last drop. “There appeared an angel unto him, . . . strengthening him.” We too, if such an hour befall us, may look to be sustained from above.— L ettice K ing . SEPTEMBER 25 Fruitful Union “ Take root downward, and bear fruit upward” (Isa. 37:31). "1 am the vine, ye are the branches. He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit; for without me ye can do nothing” (John 15:5). Union with Jesus is the source of all spiritual life, power, and fruitfulness. This union is twofold: “ I in them, and thou in me.” —A. B. S impson . "Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them" (Mk. 10:24). When Queen Victoria was opening a new Town Hall in the great town of Sheffield she had a little golden key placed in her hand, and was told that she had only to turn the key, as she sat in her carriage, and in a moment the Town Hall gates would fly open. In obedience to directions she turned the golden key, and in a mo ment, by the aid of electric wires, the gates of the building were opened. Jesus Christ must know what key it is that opens heav en’s gate since over and over again, as though He knew we might find it hard to grasp, He taught, “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find.” His authority is surely sufficient to make us con fident that the golden key of prayer, when we use it, will surely open heaven’s store house of riches to every earnest, prayerful believer.— S elected .
