MAJORS Accounting Finance

HOMETOWN Menasha, Wis. ORGANIZATION Sheet Piling Services Custer, Wis. TITLE Payroll Intern

What I did: I spent the first few weeks learning the payroll process and getting comfortable with all the tasks. On Mondays I would print all the timecards and code them, so they are all ready to be entered into the system. Tuesdays consisted of manually entering the timecards into our system and run calculations so I could run reports. Then on Wednesdays I would run several reports, some of which had to do with insurance, fringes and deductions, and taxes. After running the reports, I would go through them to make sure everything was entered into the system correctly and that the union employee’s dues and benefits were all correct. Thursdays I would submit the processed payroll and transfer money into the payroll account. There were also several journal entries and postings to do. Fridays I would cut checks for child support, submit the 401k contributions roster, and pay federal and several states income taxes. I would also help with the billing by entering daily footages into Excel and create a rough draft for the invoices. What I liked: I really liked the whole process once I got it down. My favorite part of payroll was going through the union benefits and insurance reports and making sure they all tied out. Helping create the invoices and tracking the daily square footages of the sheet piling was also one of my favorite parts of this internship.

Future Dream Job: My dream job is a financial advisor.
