HOMETOWN Seattle, Wash. ORGANIZATION D1 Training Stevens Point, Wis. TITLE Personal Training Intern
What I did: My responsibilities at my internship grew as I gained the trust of my supervisor and my fellow coworkers who were full-time and certified personal trainers. When I first started my roles were limited to janitorial jobs, checking in clients, setting up the facility for scheduled classes and personal training sessions, and shadowing other trainers during workouts to see how they manage their individual clients and large classes of clients and the different ways they teach the scheduled workouts. But after a couple of weeks my responsibilities grew and I began working on my own more and more with clients until I was leading my own classes and individual clients, programming my own workouts to fit the needs of individuals or certain groups/teams, and taking clients who were new to the facility through the basics of being in a workout class in our organization and how to perform the exercises I have for them. What I liked: My favorite part of the internship was being able to work directly with clients and apply the things I’ve learned from my more experienced coworkers and certification courses I discovered through my internship to actual workplace functions. All the information I gathered was awesome but working on my own with clients is where I really learned how to sharpen my skills as a trainer and as a manager of large groups of people and other coworkers. Without that hands-on experience of working with different kinds of people everyday, I couldn’t confidently say that I would be ready for a career in this industry once I graduate from UWSP. Future Dream Job: My dream job is to be an entrepreneur and open up my own fitness/sports training facility, similar to the one that of my internship. My experience in the sports training industry that I have from this internship and my own career as an athlete paired with my finance degree from UWSP are going to be the tools I use to realize that dream in the hopefully not so distant future.
