I’ve been in the PT field since 2005 - Started as a PT Tech and went to school to become a PTA which happened in 2009. I enjoy working at APM because I want to be a part of a growing company that has an actual interest in the community, which shows with all of the workshops and field work we do. I was excited to take on the role of Clinical Director at the beginning of this year because I have a passion for creating the best patient experiences. I have had the good fortune to work in a number of different clinical environments, and using all the tips and tricks I’ve learned over the years helps us to deliver the very highest level of patient care in Tucson. Family and friendships are very important to me. I enjoy spending time and making memories with my loved ones. I just got married in December! I spend lots of my free time on my bike, or racing the occasional destination triathlon, with my husband cheering me on or joining me for a quick hike!

This month we are happy to announce that Yolanda Talley is our new Clinical Director! She brings lots of passion and experience to the role, and she’ll be instrumental in helping us grow and serve more patients, while always keeping our patient experience the very best in

HIP, KNEE & LEG PAIN TIS THE SEASON TO BE PAIN FREE!

Whether you have hurt your joints or have been suffering for a long time, seeing a physical therapist at Applied Physical Medicine can help you return to a more active and pain-free life. Give us a call today: (520) 296-8513 While some causes are more severe than others, a physician can identify each. As the body ages, joints become inflamed. Cartilage may wear down, reducing the “buffer” between bones. In some cases, limited blood flow may cause bone tissue death, or necrosis. If you’re experiencing redness, inflammation and immobilized joints, the condition may be severe.

Your hips, knees, and lower legs are tough—but injuries happen. Your hips and knees are your largest joints, supporting your body’s weight. They work in close coordination, giving us the mobility we need. Between arthritis, injuries and age, however, pain can flare up. If you’re experiencing hip, knee or leg pain, call us to schedule a closer look. Before you do, however, let’s examine the pain itself. What Causes Hip, Knee and Leg Pain? Hip, knee and leg pain are surprisingly common. Thus, their source can come from a variety of things. If you’re experiencing pain in any part of your leg, pinpointing the exact spot can help you determine the cause. Applied Physical Medicine has pinpointed several leading causes of hip, knee and leg pain. While many causes exist, the most likely are: • Arthritis

• Tendonitis • Pinched nerves • Osteoporosis • Cancer

• Dislocation • Hip fracture • Sprains and strains

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?

While leg pain is noticeable by a slew of symptoms, several stick out. Aching or stiffness around the hip, groin, back or thigh may be a sign of deeper problems. A decreased range of motion can also be a sign of deeper problems which may later result in hip, knee or leg pain. Sometimes, inactivity can contribute to immobility—and later pain. If you’re limping, lurching or are experiencing bad balance, contact a physician. While some hip, knee and leg pains go away, those lasting longer than several months may be hinting at a deeper issue. How Physical Therapy Can Help In many cases, physical therapy can help patients increase leg mobility. In doing so, they can stretch, flex and strengthen the muscles responsible for support. If a joint appears deformed, or if sudden swelling occurs, contact a physician immediately. A good physical therapy program can assist with post-operation treatment, too. If you’ve undergone treatment for osteoporosis, dislocation or a fracture, your therapist can help you reclaim full mobility—and a healthy lifestyle. From start to finish, we’re dedicated to your ongoing wellness. On every level, physical therapy serves to enhance the patient’s quality of life. We’re here to help, and we have years of experience backing every therapy option. Contact one of our providers today, and tell us about your symptoms. THE IMPORTANCE OF HEALTHY KNEES WHEN USING THE STAIRS

The complex network of bones, ligaments, tendons, and muscles in the knee joint are vulnerable. Knee pain can result from many problems, from sports injuries to arthritis to gout. And when knee arthritis or a torn knee ligament strikes, climbing stairs, walking, and even standing can be painful. Strengthening the knee is one way to prevent knee trouble and deal with a knee condition you already have. One exercise that’s simple to do is stair climbing. Stair climbing benefits Strengthening the muscles around the knee will decrease the stress on the joint itself. These muscles include the quadriceps at the front of the thigh and the hamstrings at the back of the thigh. Both of these large muscle groups get a workout when you climb stairs. Your own weight is enough to make stair climbing a challenge. Stair climbing also benefits the knees indirectly by helping to manage your weight. By walking up steps for just five minutes, you can burn about 45

calories. If you do that five times per week, that’s 225 calories. Doing it 50 weeks a year can burn 11,250 calories. A pound is about 3,500 calories, so with a little stair climbing most days of the year you can lose more than three pounds. Ready for a little more math? If you’re 10 pounds overweight, you’re adding 30 to 60 pounds of additional pressure on your knees with every step. Climbing stairs can help you take pressure off the joints by burning calories and dropping pounds. If you have knee pain for any reason, don’t ignore it. Rehabilitation such as exercise can often ease the pain and make walking enjoyable again. If your knee condition requires more care, see a knee specialist at Marketplace Wellness.
