Lifelong Learning ANTICIPATING THE ANNUAL HINMAN DENTAL MEETING

“Develop a passion for learning. If you do, you will never cease to grow.”

I also love walking the exhibition floor where you can try out the newest materials and latest technologies. This year, the major focus of the meeting was dentistry and systemic health. You have likely heard us in the office talking about the recent links between oral health and cardiovascular disease, inflammatory disease and disorder, diabetes, and even cognitive impairments, but the links between oral and whole-body health continue to be discovered. We are truly in an exciting time for dentistry, medicine, and living our best lives — whether you’re 2 or 102 years old! Although the primary focus is continuing education, one of my favorite parts of this event is the fellowship and time spent away from the office with our Jones Smiles team. We always find time during the conference to gather and share a meal or two as well as do a fun group activity. This year, like every other, our team had a wonderful time at the Hinman Meeting. We all took something away from the meeting that will allow us to be better clinicians and ultimately provide our patients with the best care.

–Anthony J., author

I’m reminded of this quote every spring as our entire office attends the Thomas P. Hinman Dental Meeting. We look forward to this continuing education event every year, as it’s not only a chance to see some of the newest emerging technologies but also to spend a few days together as a team away from the office. The annual Hinman Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia, is a great opportunity for our team to expand our skills and knowledge and to learn about the latest advancements in the field of dentistry. I first attended the Hinman Meeting with my classmates in dental school. This early exposure to advanced continuing education sparked my desire to be a lifelong student. At past meetings, I have taken courses to be certified in Botox, facial injectables, and Invisalign. I have also heard from great motivational speakers and participated in team-building activities. The courses at the meeting are diverse, offering something of interest to everyone on our team.

WALK TO WORK DAY A START TO A MORE ACTIVE LIFE

Everyone knows that walking is healthy for us, but not very many people have the chance to stretch their legs. With a busy schedule, you might not have the luxury to get up earlier and get a quick brisk walk in. But that doesn’t mean routines can’t be changed. Walk to Work Day is an unofficial holiday that encourages people to walk more in their daily lives. Finding the time to walk for 30 minutes a day can help you lose weight, reduce the chance of heart disease and diabetes, and improve emotional and mental health. A Little History Walk to Work Day takes place on the first Friday of April every year and has been celebrated since 2004. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services promoted the holiday with enthusiasm as a way to counter the alarming rise in obesity and health issues throughout the country. Since its debut, Walk to Work Day has been picked up by people, businesses, and organizations across the world to inspire people everywhere to exercise more. Observing the Holiday To celebrate Walk to Work Day, simply slip on your walking shoes, grab a portable breakfast, and head out the door! Be sure to bring an extra outfit and shoes with you as walking in high heels, dress shoes, and/or dress attire can be uncomfortable.

For people who don’t have the time, try taking a short walk around the workplace during breaks or lunch. Getting in a 15-minute walk during the day will help you feel more refreshed and ready to get back into the grind. You can also invite other coworkers or friends to walk with you. Other Modes of Transportation Although Walk to Work Day encourages people to walk, there are other ways to get to work without having to drive. Biking is an excellent means of transportation and can be helpful for people who might have a longer

commute. If you don’t own a bike but are still in need of a quick transport between two locations, you can hop on an electric scooter. These scooters have appeared across America over the past year or so and have proven handy for individuals needing to get from point A to point B quickly. Walk to Work Day offers a perfect chance to change up your routine for a more active lifestyle. Let this holiday be the first step in many that will come!

WHAT OUR PATIENTS ARE SAYING

“There is absolutely nothing that could be improved on. I am new to the area and had never met any of the employees there. However, I can honestly say I have never been treated with as much respect as I was there. All the staff were extremely pleasant, and you could tell it was not fake as in most places these days. I can’t say enough good things about my experience.” –THERESA B.

“I love this place! When I walked in, Victoria greeted me with the biggest smile and even offered to make me a cup of coffee while I filled out my paperwork. I was seen on time, they were thorough and explained everything to me each step of the way. I was a little nervous checking out a new dental office but I am so glad I made the switch!” –JENNY P.

Which Flossing Method Should You Use?

WATER FLOSSERS VS. DENTAL FLOSS

If you’ve ever visited the dentist, it’s more than likely you’ve been asked how frequently you floss. Truthfully, many people choose not to floss — in fact, only about 4 in 10 Americans do. The act of flossing can be difficult for some people, but it’s one of the most important daily habits you can develop to sustain overall health.

flosser since it’s easier to use, especially if you have braces, dental implants, or nonremovable bridgework.

Dental Floss

The Importance of Flossing

SMILE-FRIENDLY RECIPES Dentists recommend that, whichever method you choose, you should floss at least once a day for optimal teeth and gum health. To get into the habit of flossing more regularly, try to floss before you brush your teeth. According to the American Academy of Periodontology, that’s the “ideal sequence for the most thorough removal of dental plaque.” Floss has been around for about 200 years, but it didn’t become popular until after WWII. Dental floss functions similarly to a water flosser, except that instead of using a stream of water, you manually floss between your teeth and along your gums to remove debris, bacteria, and tartar. Many individuals prefer to use dental floss because it allows you to have more control when you floss. However, it can sometimes cause the gums to bleed, which is why many prefer water flossers.

Flossing is a vital part of maintaining oral health because it removes food, bacteria, and plaque that toothbrushes can’t reach. A person who brushes their teeth but doesn’t floss is more likely to suffer from poor oral health than someone who flosses once a day. And in the dental world, there are two popular methods of flossing: water flossers and dental floss.

Water Flossers

Water flossers shoot out a jet of water that flows between the teeth as its nozzle moves along the gum line. The pressurized water blasts your gums and the hard-to-reach places, removing food, debris, plaque, and bacteria in pulsating bursts. Although these devices can be expensive, many people prefer the water

3 Travel Myths You Should Stop Believing PARIS ON A BUDGET?

Traveling has many social and educational benefits, but some people have hesitations that prevent them from jetting off on new adventures. Below are three debunked travel myths to give you some ease as you plan your summer vacation! Myth: Vacations are expensive. Fact: You can travel anywhere on a budget. Tracking flights to score the best deal, setting spending limits, and packing meals are a few ways to save money. Hostels and Airbnbs are great alternatives to spendy hotel stays. Additionally, you don’t have to cross the country to have a great trip. Every state has museums, unique roadside attractions, historical sites, and a booming nightlife. When you know your price limits and what you want to do, traveling can be a fun and inexpensive venture. Myth: Traveling is dangerous. Fact: If you’re smart about what you do and where you go, traveling can be safe. Go with your gut and only stay somewhere that is approved by travel guides. Visit places you feel comfortable in, and do your research by reading travel blogs, websites, and books to find places that have been vetted by others. Traveling in groups can also be a great way to lower your

risk of danger. As long as you plan ahead, you will have a safe trip.

Myth: Jet lag is caused by a lack of sleep. Fact: While jet lag can make you sleepy, it’s actually caused by a disruption in your circadian rhythm. Our bodies are cyclical, and the circadian rhythm is set by both a natural need for your body to reset and outside forces, such as your job, time zone, and diet. Travel can disrupt this rhythm and routine, which leaves you lethargic during and after your vacation. Sticking to water before and during your flights and staying physically active during and after traveling are great ways to fight jet lag and get back into your normal rhythm. Don’t let these travel myths keep you from seeing the world. Set a budget, go with your gut, and prepare for a shifting rhythm to make your next adventure the best one yet.
