perance, for against such there is no law.” A READY ANSWER Three rowdy boys spent their time fooling around most of the summer . , One day, while coming from the nearby river, they encountered the new minis ter and thought they would have a little fun at his expense. Running up to him, out of breath, one remarked, “Guess what? We killed the devil. We caught him down by the stream, and choked him to death.” “Yeah,” another rejoined, “Now you’ll have to quit your job; there?s nothing left for you to do around here. We’ve done it for you. The devil’s dead.” The preacher smiled kindly, and then replied, “No boys, I’m afraid that’s where yoiire all wrong.” “W hats the matter?” the third asked. “Don’t you believe we killed the devil?” “Oh, it’s not that,” the min ister continued. “It’s just that now I’ll have some o f his orphaned boys to take care of.” A ll three of them were in the service the next Sunday to hear what this wise man of God had to say. The world w ill always be ready to trip up the Christian. As a witness for the Lord, we must be ready always to give an answer to every man that ask- eth us, a reason for the hope that is in us, with meekness and fear! SLEEPING THROUGH THE SERMON A friend in Colorado wrote about a young minister who, being eager to im prove on his sermons, decided that he would tape record the services, play them back, and try to criticise himself. So, seated before the instrument, he awaited the playback. He heard the opening prayer, Scripture reading, an nouncements; everything was just as he could have wished it. Then came the sermon. When he awoke sometime later, the choir was just singing the closing hymn. In instructing our stu dents on the subject of homiletics, or how to preach, it is not so much that one should memorize the heart of the message, but that in each message there is the heart of God revealed in the simple plan of salvation by grace through faith.
