Note: While English is optional at Year 12 and 13, students thinking about pursuing tertiary studies should bear in mind that NCEA Level 3 English is often an entry requirement into university courses; even in science-based disciplines like Engineering or Medicine. Students considering study in England, Australia or the USA will need to complete Level 3 English as a university entrance requirement in these countries. There are two Level 2 English courses available: Option 1—201 English: Text and context This course examines literature as a product of its context. Classes will study different texts, drawing on the expertise of individual teachers and playing to the strengths of the students in the group, but all will spend time looking at the social and historical context in which a text is produced. Boys will be encouraged to investigate the concerns of a particular literary period or movement, and reflect on the power of literature to both reflect and also shape society. All classes will study a novel or extended written text, and a range of shorter written text and visual material. Students will be offered between 18 and 23 credits from the Achievement Standards listed below. The specific standards may vary by class. The English department will discuss this with students who opt into 201 English. (Specific Achievement Standards may be subject to change)
Either: AS 90857 – Deliver an oral text OR: AS90855 – Create a visual text (3 credits)
