Option 2—202 English: Visions of masculinity In this more visual and media-based course, classes will interrogate the portrayal of boys and men in literature, media and society. This conceptual focus allows students to think about the wider relevance of literature and develop connections between text and context, and to explore the power of literature and media to shape the society in which it is constructed. Note: This course alone will not offer sufficient literacy credits for Level 2 University Entrance requirements. Periods per week Five Note: While English is optional at Year 12 and 13, students thinking about pursuing tertiary studies should bear in mind that NCEA Level 3 English is often an entry requirement into university courses; even in science-based disciplines like engineering or medicine. Students considering study in England, Australia or the USA will need to complete Level 3 English as a university entrance requirement in these countries. There are two Level 3 English courses available: Option 1—301 English: The changing world This course examines the changing nature of literature in our ever-changing world. The last few years have witnessed the nomination of a graphic novel for the Man Booker Prize, the Nobel Prize for Literature being awarded to a popular songwriter, and respected authors taking to Twitter and YouTube as serious literary mediums. Students will examine is the place of the literary attempts to construct new literary languages in response to cultural upheaval, before applying this lens to contemporary society and culture. Students will be offered between 18 and 23 credits from the Achievement Standards listed below. The specific standards may vary by class. The English department will discuss this with students who opt into 301 English. (Specific Achievement Standards may be subject to change)
