This course introduces students to concepts involved in understanding participation and performance in sport and outdoor education, and howwe can benefit fromphysical activity.The affects of exercise upon the body through training,biomechanics and skill learning. It is a foundation for studentswho have an interest in physical education and sport and are planning study or a career in sport and leisure.The course covers theoretical and practical aspects of physical education, offering students 18 credits in NCEA Level 1 plus three credits at Level 2. Programme AS90963 – 1.2 Describe the function of the body as it relates to the performance of physical activity. (5 credits – internal) AS90964 – 1.3 Demonstrate quality movement in the performance of a physical activity. (3 credits – internal) AS90965 – 1.4 Describe the societal influences on physical activity and the implications for self and others. (4 credits – internal) AS90967 – 1.6 Demonstrate strategies to improve the performance of a physical activity and describe the outcomes. (3 credits – internal) AS90968 – 1.7 Outdoors Demonstrate and show understanding of responsible behaviour for safety during outdoor education activity. (3 credits – internal)

A full NCEA Level 2 course is offered in this year group. It encompasses principles and methods of training, sociology, leadership, motor-skill learning, anatomy, biomechanics and performances in canoe polo and a chosen sport. This course is recommended for those going on to Year 13 Physical Education. Programme AS91328 Demonstrate understanding of how and why biophysical principles relate to the learning of physical skills. (5 credits – internal) AS91329 Demonstrate understanding of the application of biophysical principles to training for physical activity. (4 credits – internal) AS91330 Perform a physical activity in an applied setting. (4 credits – internal) AS91331 Explain the significance for self, others and society of a sporting event, physical activity, or festival. (4 credits – internal) AS91335 Examine the implementation and outcome(s) of a physical activity event or opportunity. (3 credits – internal)
