This course introduces students to the concepts and application of sports leadership, coaching principles and interpersonal skills.Therewill be a balance of both theoretical and practical elements to the course. Students need to be aware of the commitment to practical hours in order tomeet assessment criteria of coaching and instruction.The coursewill give students the opportunity toworkwithYear 8 students across several disciplines aswell as becoming accreditedwith coaching or officiating qualifications. Note:University Entrance will not be available via this course. Programme US22770 Demonstrate knowledge of sports coaching, the coaching environment, and sports participants needs. (4 credits – internal) US22771 Plan a beginner level coaching session for sports participants. (4 credits – internal) US22768 Conduct and review a beginner level coaching session. (6 credits – internal) US25811 Demonstrate and apply knowledge of effective communication for sport coaching practice. (4 credits – internal) US21414 Plan and run a recreation activity. (4 credits – internal) AS 3.9 Examine contemporary leadership principles applied in physical education contexts. (4 credits – internal)

A full NCEA Level 3 course is offered in this year group. There is a strong academic focus in this course with comprehensive studies of contemporary leadership, sociology, skill acquisition, biomechanics, training principles and physiology. The course is broken up into four main modules that cover a variety of contexts, which may include NFL, golf, and the globalisation commodification of sport. Scholarship in Physical Education & Health is applied additionally as part of the programme. Programme AS91499 Analyse a physical skill performed by self or others. (3 credits – internal) AS91501 Demonstrate quality performance of a physical activity in an applied setting. (4 credits – internal) AS91504 Analyse issues in safety management for outdoor activity to devise safety management strategies.
