CWU’s Safety and Health Management (SHM) Program Annual Newsletter
The faculty of the SHM program congratulates the class of 2019. The program graduated 34 students during academic year 2018-19.
STUDENT UPDATE
Our students continue to excel with their participation in the CWU American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) Student Section under the advisement of Professor Morgan Bliss. Professor Jennifer Serne will take over the advisor role of the section starting fall 2019. The program thanks Bliss for her service these last two years. As always, the section’s goal is to continue to provide additional opportunities for current and prospective students to learn more about occupational safety and health discipline, promote interaction between students and OSH professionals, recruit new students
into the program, and offer excellent leadership opportunities for student section officers. On May 3, 2019, the ASSP Student Section, in conjunction with Puget Sound ASSP Chapter, hosted a Professional Development Conference (PDC) in the Student Union and Recreation Center (SURC) with more than 150 attendees from
across the state. Our alumnus Brian Van, safety director for Guy F. Atkinson Construction, LLC, and former president of the ASSP Puget Sound Chapter, again led the PDC’s efforts. The Student Section elected their executive board for academic year 2019-20, with the continued goal to be the outstanding student section in the nation. Volunteering with ASSP supports and advances the organization and our profession. As volunteers, the students’ professional networks will grow, they will benefit from access to professional development opportunities, and they will gain insights to trends and innovations in the occupational safety and health (OSH) profession. To help our alumni and friends remain engaged with the SHM program, we hold our annual Alumni, Friends, and Graduating Seniors Night in Ellensburg every spring. This year, it was held in conjunction with the ASSP Puget
Sound Chapter PDC on May 3, 2019. More than 40 alumni and friends attended. Program graduates and friends are encouraged to attend this event in 2020, anticipated to be on May 7, 2020 at 5 p.m. in Hogue Technology Building.

Master of Science degree in Safety and Health Management In February 2019, SHM successfully launched a new master of science degree in Safety and Health Management (MS-SHM). The degree program is 100 percent online and part-time, designed for working professionals. The response to the new degree, led by Professor Morgan Bliss, was Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Applied Science in Risk, Insurance, and Safety Management Coming fall 2019 we will launch a bachelor of science and a bachelor of applied science in risk, insurance, and safety management. The program’s mission is to prepare students to be job-ready professionals equipped with the skills, competencies, and leadership capabilities to succeed in the contemporary risk, insurance, and safety management field. The differences between the two degrees are the degree types (BS vs. BAS), admission requirements, and prospective student population.

He led the completion of a new publication— “Safe and Innovative Work Best Practices for Mechanical Crafts”— which presents 72 innovations and best practices to increase safety in mechanical contracting, one of America’s most dangerous industries. Comfort Systems USA Northwest, Central Washington University, Oregon State University and McKinstry partnered to publish the best practices. This three- year effort was made possible through the Safety and Health Investment Projects (SHIP) grant program, administered by the
ergonomics, construction safety, general industry safety, and more. She designed and added new lab modules into the ergonomics course. She will lead an essential task for our department as the diversity and inclusivity director in the coming years to create an inclusive excellence culture at ETSC. Serne spoke at the ASSP Puget Sound PDC at CWU in May 2019. She is currently pursuing her Ph.D., and will be starting her doctoral research project soon.
