CWU’s Safety and Health Management (SHM) Program Annual Newsletter

The faculty of the SHM program congratulates the class of 2019. The program graduated 34 students during academic year 2018-19.

STUDENT UPDATE

Our students continue to excel with their participation in the CWU American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) Student Section under the advisement of Professor Morgan Bliss. Professor Jennifer Serne will take over the advisor role of the section starting fall 2019. The program thanks Bliss for her service these last two years. As always, the section’s goal is to continue to provide additional opportunities for current and prospective students to learn more about occupational safety and health discipline, promote interaction between students and OSH professionals, recruit new students

into the program, and offer excellent leadership opportunities for student section officers. On May 3, 2019, the ASSP Student Section, in conjunction with Puget Sound ASSP Chapter, hosted a Professional Development Conference (PDC) in the Student Union and Recreation Center (SURC) with more than 150 attendees from

across the state. Our alumnus Brian Van, safety director for Guy F. Atkinson Construction, LLC, and former president of the ASSP Puget Sound Chapter, again led the PDC’s efforts. The Lower Columbia Basin Chapter continues to closely collaborate with the planning efforts. Pictured above: The SHM Class of 2019 with Faculty
