in Pisidia (Acts 13:16-41). It covers Bib lical history from Egypt down to the resur rection of Christ. Such preaching stirred up trouble, but it was powerful, bringing nearly the whole city out to hear the “word of God” (v. 44). Moral and social con ditions were -bad everywhere, but the mis sionaries stuck to the ministry of the Word. Social improvement is the by product, not the primary task of mission ary work. 3. The central message of the mission aries was salvation by grace through Jesus Christ crucified and risen from the dead, not by works o f law (Acts 13:38, 39). See also the latter part of verse 43. Nothing else has ever succeeded. Yet we are being . told today by the experts that the mission ary message must be revised. 4. The missionaries did not try to con vert everybody in one place before moving to another. Evidently they knew the plan o f God for the present age—not world conversion, but the taking out of a people for His name (Acts 15:14-17). 5. After winning converts to Christ, the missionaries did not abandon them to their own devices, but gave them instruction in the faith, and counseled them in the organi zation of churches and the election o f an eldership (Acts 14:21-23). Thus churches were developed which were self-supporting and self-governing, not dependent upon any missionary for their continued exist- ènce. ------------- Golden Text Illustration Men do not readily accept thè new unless they are convinced that it is better than that which they have known. In the Intelligencer appeared an example of this tendency: “We are told that it was Ben jamin Franklin who discovered that plaster sown in a field would make things grow. He told his neighbors, but they did not believe him. Early the next ^Spring, he went into his field . . . Close by the path where men would walk, he traced with his finger some letters and put plaster into them, and then sowed his seed.broadcast in the field. After a week or two, the seeds sprang up. His neighbors, as they passed that way, were very much surprised to see in brighter green than all the rest of the field the writing in large letters : ‘This has been plastered.’ Franklin did not need to argue with his neighbors.. . . As the season went on and the grain grew, those bright green letters rose above all the rest until they were a kind of relief plate in the field: ‘This has been plastered.” ’ ,;* . — - - ----- — S elected .
