SEPTEMBER 27 Alertness “ The kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchantman” (Matt. 13:45). If the citizen of the kingdom of God can be suggestively compared to a merchant man, there must be something about him exceedingly businesslike and enterprising. Here, then, is a quality which is greatly esteemed in the ways o f the world—the quality of alertness. It is characteristic of every successful merchantman. . . . A merchantman must be alert for the detec tion of hidden perils. He must be alert for the perception of equally hidden opportu nity. He must be alert for the recognition of failing methods. His eyes must clearly see where old roads are played out, and where new ground may be broken. Let us carry the suggestion over into the affairs of the kingdom.— J. H. J owett . SEPTEMBER 28 The Little Things of Life "Thè steps o f a good man are ordered by the Lord” (Psa. 37:23). Much of the beauty of holiness lies in little things. Microscopic holiness is the perfection o f excellence ; if a life will bear examination in each hour of it, it is pure indeed. Those who are not careful about their words, and even thoughts, will soon grow careless concerning their more not able actions. Those who tolerate sin in what they think to be little things, will soon indulge it in greater matters. To live by the day and to watch each step is the true pilgrimage method. More lies in the careful noting o f every single act than careless minds can well imagine. . . . This brief prayer, “Order my steps,” teaches us attention to the minutiae of life. May we have grace to learn the lesson. — C harles H addón S purgeon .

SEPTEMBER 29 Made Usable “ The God o f all grace . , . make you per fe c t ’ (1 Pet. 5:10). The word “perfect” is one you might use if, for instance, you had to mend a broken table, by making it stand on four legs firm, or if you had to mend a broken net by making the broken meshes up. It does not mean making an absolutely ideal and faultless thing, but making a thing for its purpose, sound, workable, and good. And what the apostle means here is that the God of all grace shall (using this well- understood word in the Greek tongue in which Peter wrote) make believers in this sense wholly complete; supply that which is lacking to their faith: furnish them with that which they have not yet discovered in their Lord, that they may be equipped, that the broken joint may be strengthened, so that their walk may be a real walk, and not a crawl upon the earth. — H andley G. C. M oule . "And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the Mount of Olives” (Matt. 26:30). They sang an hymn! Did Christ design Their drooping spirits thus to raise? They sang some simple psalm divine 1 Were richer through united praise. They sang an hymn! We, too, may choose To raise the voice though heart be sad; Blest means if thus our load we lose, And find our spirits strangely glad. — J. D anson S m ith .
