I cannot imagine doing anything else!” Sea cadets deploying on vessels has long been an important part of the program to connect youth with both the Royal Cana- dian Navy (RCN) and the civilian commu- nity. The SCSDs are also taking place on the heels of the commemoration of the War of 1812 and the role that conflict played in shaping Canada’s national identity.

Anthony Bastien enjoyed a once-in-a- lifetime opportunity for a sea cadet from Ontario. He spent time on board a Royal Canadian Navy vessel as part of a special training exercise. The Rockland youth is a petty officer first class (PO1) in the Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps Falkland. He spent a week aboard an RCN vessel at the beginning of March, hon- ing his seamanship skills, as part of the 19th Annual Sea Cadet Seamanship Deployment (SCSD) exercise off the coast of British Co- lumbia. “It was such a great opportunity,”said PO1 Bastien. “I adapted to ship-borne living and learned the different parts of the ship and what it means to be a crew member. It gave me an inside look of what happens at-sea, what to look for, what happens in the en- gine room and the daily routines.” Bastien first joined Cadets based on the enthusiasm and inspiration of his aunt. Now he cannot imagine not being a sea cadet. “Cadets is such a big part of my life. I can- not think of another program that offers so much in terms of fun, but skills as well. Indeed, there is leadership, self-discipline and citizenship. However, there are so many other opportunities such as the Duke of Edinburgh Program, which I received the bronze level.
