Residential college plans for 2023
What’s happening and why? During the COVID-19 pandemic the University focused on supporting the health and wellbeing of our residents, particularly during periods of lockdowns, restrictions, and isolation for covid-positive residents. Our residents and staff have navigated this difficult period with great resilience and a shared commitment to caring for each other, but we recognise the impact on individual well- being and the sense of community during this time. As restrictions ease, we can refocus our attention on the residential experience and fostering the sense of connection and belonging within and between the residential communities. We can now implement strategies that respond to the needs of our diverse student cohort; recognising that this may look different for each location while sharing a common characteristic of care, community and belonging. We know that our colleges play a vital part of our University legacy, with the alumni of our residential colleges greatly valuing their experiences and the relationships formed and maintained from that time. We want to give our current and future residents opportunity to experience that deep sense of belonging and community. To that end, we have exciting plans for the residents of 42 Melville Street, as we begin to embrace a college community model in 2023, and we would love your help in achieving that goal.
Will residents play a part in leading this change? Yes! We want to place students at the heart and centre of the formation and development of our college community model. We need residents to volunteer to become leaders and form the first committee to guide this exciting new chapter at UTAS. Supported by staff and provided with the training and funding required, the college committees will be able to plan and deliver a range of events and activities in 2023 and make our residential college a fabulous place to live, learn and grow. What would I be doing if I am part of the Residents Committee? You’d be part of the team who plans, organises and runs a range of activities and events. These would include social experiences, activity-based events, study or academic supports, college sports, community meals, residential gatherings for cards/games/book clubs and whatever else you might think of! The committees will have support and active help from staff, so it shouldn’t be too demanding, but it will require a regular commitment to building the type of residential college community we all want. You’d also enjoy support and connection from the established committees at Christ College and John Fisher College, in Sandy Bay.
