Our District is teaming up with Orant Charities to empower girls of Malawi to continue their education beyond the 8 th grade.

8 Orant Charities provides a full-time Education Administrator to select students, coordinate between schooling and the family and overseeing communications between the students and Rotarian Donors. In addition, District 5810 Rotarians are invited to Malawai to see all the good work being done by Rotary and Orant Charities. Rotary doing good, one girl at a time. Preparing for the Future rotary5810.org Orant Charities works in rural communities in the southern African country of Malawi, one of the poorest countries in the world. They provide holistic community development services that are dedicated to the principle of community involvement and ownership and are designed to help the poor improve their own circumstances through sustainable development. Malawi girls face barriers that are cultural as well as practical that prevent them from continuing their education. When family income is limited, girls may be sent home for weeks at a time when they struggle with school fees. Paying for a male child's schooling can seem like a better investment than paying for a girl's. Girls also struggle with trying to avoid the distractions of boys, along with staying on top of challenging coursework. A Human Rights Watch report found that, between 2010 and 2013, 44,000 girls attending primary school in Malawi dropped out due to marriage or pregnancy. Many girls are determined to overcome obstacles to get an education so they can improve life for their communities. We want to help. And we can by providing financial support to assist the girls of Malawi to stay in school. It costs approximately $300 to educate one student per year, which is $1,200 for all four years of a high school education. Because of the efforts of PDG LB Showalter and his wife Donna, the district has education funds available to provide four years of education for up to 30 students. But that’s not all; with donations from our generous Rotarians we can leverage the program with club support and district grants to provide education for 100’s of students. If 20 of our 65 clubs participate at $1,200 with matching district grants we will replicate this gift every year.
