District 5810 Halftime Newsletter rev4

ROTARY DISTRICT 5810 REPRESENTING 65 ROTA Y CLUBS IN NORTH TEXAS SPRING 2017 The halftime report of giving back to each other, to communities and to the world at large.

The 1st half of our Rotary year has provided an abundance of blessings for our Rotarians, our community and the world. As a North Texas Rotarian you can be proud of our collective accomplishments. You are all Rotarian Super Heroes . Our District leads the Zone in new members as you share the gift of Rotary with your friends and colleagues. Keep sharing and remember that it is up to us to grow our organization with people that share the characteristics of a Rotarian . Most of us are Rotarians because someone cared enough to invite us into the Organization. Please make a commitment to share Rotary by inviting someone special to join. I am very grateful for this opportunity—along with your friendship, trust and support—to work together to change the world through Rotary Serving Humanity. Please enjoy this Halftime Report and let me know what you would like to see in future newsletters and what I can do to better serve you and your club . ~ DG Bill

Good Times Having Fun Doing Good. Besides weekly meetings, Rotary Clubs of North Texas are participating in social meetups; Halloween parties, holiday gatherings, ladies’ night- out, networking over breakfasts, friends of Rotary night-out, bowling, late nights at museums, football watching parties, Rotary club birthday parties, happy hours, dinners, sharing, smiles, stories, and laugher all in the name of fellowship. Rotary Club of Dallas is an organization of inspired individuals that translate their passions into relevant social causes to change lives in

communities. One of those passions is their "I Like Me!" program which provides a personalized program for children preschool through grade two.

Our Rotarians are making a difference in communities through various service projects: cleaning up The Lake, planting a garden, giving blood, raising flags, greeting Veterans at the airports, welcoming visitors to the butterflies and snakes at the State Fair, transporting kids to Rotary events, shopping, delivering, flying, hosting Shred-a-thons, handing out scholarships, honoring students, parades, tree lightings, and oh so many more too numerous to go on about.

Rotary Club of Preston Trails is putting “service above self” in Celina and Gunter, by sponsoring a water tank system at a primary school in Jamaica. The water tank will help ensure that students have enough water pressure throughout the day so the school can stay open even when the water pressure in the city's system is not sufficient. One of our service projects for our District Conference Cruise is to visit this location. Rotary Club of Rockwall’s main objective is service in the community, workplace & throughout the world. They have sponsored libraries to be built in 7 classrooms at a Montego Bay school for children with special needs. They have collected 60 boxes of books and school supplies that will be delivered as one of our service projects for our District Conference Cruise.

On Monday, January 2, 2017 at the 128 th annual Tournament of Roses Parade, our Rotary Float was awarded the Princess Award for the most beautiful float 35′ and under. Congratulations! “Doing Good in the World” was the Rotary Foundation Centennial celebration entry. Rotary is a community based organization that has international implications so we do good works not only locally but internationally. Featured along the floats 35-foot-long-friendly-dragons-body are the symbols that represented the philanthropic efforts by Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation. A 100-year medallion hung off the dragon’s bit celebrating The Rotary Foundation Centennial. Each of the float outwalkers where authentically dressed representing different countries around the world and carrying a classic cinnamon coated suitcase featuring symbols of the six Rotary areas of focus and Rotary’s signature program “End Polio Now” emblem. Why is Rotary in the Rose Bowl Parade? Because in 1979, when Rotary was celebrating its 75 th Anniversary, Rotarian Jack Gilbert of the Wilshire Rotary Club in Los Angeles, California had an idea. He believed that by entering a float in the 1980 New Year’s Day Rose Parade, Rotary could communicate its message “Service Above Self” to millions of people worldwide. And for the last 33 consecutive years, we did just that! Our annual participation in the parade is unquestionably the highest visibility Rotary promotion in the world. Congratulations to Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation on 100 years of serving humanity, changing lives and improving communities all over the world.

Hey, looky there, it’s DG Bill. Check out those legs!

Our District is teaming up with Orant Charities to empower girls of Malawi to continue their education beyond the 8 th grade.

8 Orant Charities provides a full-time Education Administrator to select students, coordinate between schooling and the family and overseeing communications between the students and Rotarian Donors. In addition, District 5810 Rotarians are invited to Malawai to see all the good work being done by Rotary and Orant Charities. Rotary doing good, one girl at a time. Preparing for the Future rotary5810.org Orant Charities works in rural communities in the southern African country of Malawi, one of the poorest countries in the world. They provide holistic community development services that are dedicated to the principle of community involvement and ownership and are designed to help the poor improve their own circumstances through sustainable development. Malawi girls face barriers that are cultural as well as practical that prevent them from continuing their education. When family income is limited, girls may be sent home for weeks at a time when they struggle with school fees. Paying for a male child's schooling can seem like a better investment than paying for a girl's. Girls also struggle with trying to avoid the distractions of boys, along with staying on top of challenging coursework. A Human Rights Watch report found that, between 2010 and 2013, 44,000 girls attending primary school in Malawi dropped out due to marriage or pregnancy. Many girls are determined to overcome obstacles to get an education so they can improve life for their communities. We want to help. And we can by providing financial support to assist the girls of Malawi to stay in school. It costs approximately $300 to educate one student per year, which is $1,200 for all four years of a high school education. Because of the efforts of PDG LB Showalter and his wife Donna, the district has education funds available to provide four years of education for up to 30 students. But that’s not all; with donations from our generous Rotarians we can leverage the program with club support and district grants to provide education for 100’s of students. If 20 of our 65 clubs participate at $1,200 with matching district grants we will replicate this gift every year.
