Police in Ontario’s rural and urban areas are celebrating a record low in the num- ber of tra"c fatalities where failure to wear seat belts was a factor. The OPP’s tra!c statistics for the past 10 years showa record low so far for 2014 in the number of seatbelt-related fatal accidents. The mandatory seatbelt law in Ontario has not yet achieved 100-per cent compliance but police are seeing a signi"cant impact in tra!c fatality numbers where seat belt use is involved. “With just over three months to go in the year,” stated OPP Deputy Commissio- ner Brad Blair, “we are cautiously optimistic OPP cheer for record seat belt users and hopeful about reaching a 10-year low in seat belt-related road deaths, but we do not want the public to take away the wrong message from this promising data. Until people reach 100 per cent compliance with seat belt laws, sadly more victims of all ages will succumb to injuries sustained because they were either not wearing a seat belt or were not properly restrained in the vehicle.” During the period from 2005 to 2007, more than 100 people died each year in accidents where failure to wear a seat belt was a factor. The number dropped to below 100 for several years after with the man- datory seat belt rule and police programs combining both enforcement with public awareness. The record low during the past decade was 68 in 2009 and last year the total number of seat belt-related deaths in Ontario was 73. This year to date the number is 32 just as the OPP and other police forces in the pro-

vince begin their fall seat belt awareness campaign. During routine pullovers and any special road checkstops set up during the next few weeks, police will look to see if drivers and passengers are using seat belts, and if any infants are in the vehicle, that they are in a proper car seat or booster seat.
