Hydroquinone (HQ) has long been used by cosmeceutical companies large and small in lightening and brightening formulas as a way to correct pigmentation disorders. dose however, it also brought into the spotlight many natural alternatives that we have been using for years.

WHAT IS HYDROQUINONE?

HQ is a chemical used to inhibit the synthesis of melanin by blocking one of the enzymes in the synthetic pathway while destroying the melanocytes that produce it. When used in excess it can cause certain skin sensitivities and because it reduces melanin production, it may increase vulnerability to UV damage.

CONCERNS USING HQ

Overuse of HQ can lead to ochronosis, where melanin is deposited into the dermis resulting in permanent deep pigmentation. Other concerns came about with misuse of the ingredient, mislabeling, in addition to the risk of increased carcinogens in the body.

NATURAL ALTERNATIVES TO HQ

Understanding the concerns, limitations and knowing not every skin is equal, we have spent considerable time researching and developing HQ alternatives for over 20 years now. Having options are good with any skin and pigmentation is no different.
