BOLD STEP 5 Carbon-Free Energy
BOLD STEP 7 Quality People- Centered Public Realm A minimum of 10% of today’s street space that currently only serves motor vehicles, excluding transit, will be reallocated for sustainable transportation or public gathering by 2030. The natural environment will be integrated with the public realm.

The City will invest in a small electrical grid in order to accommodate the required rapid conversion to building and vehicle electrification.

BOLD STEP 6 Robust Urban Forest
Expanded the urban tree canopy through Phase 1 of the Urban Reforestation and Biodiversity Enhancement Initiative, exceeding the Urban Forest Management Strategy target with more than 2,300 new trees planted citywide. Began Phase 2 of the Urban Reforestation and Biodiversity Enhancement Initiative, with a goal of planting more than 6,000 new trees on streets and boulevards by 2030 to help increase overall tree canopy coverage. Supported urban forest growth and climate resilience through annual tree sale events, with 300 trees distributed to residents. Supported urban greening and biodiversity through creation of a new rain garden at Terry Hughes Park featuring native vegetation and green infrastructure elements.

New Westminster’s urban forest canopy cover will be increased to 27% by 2030 to support the removal of 4,050 tonnes of carbon pollution every year and increase our forest’s carbon storage capacity by 50%.
